Josh Ross dribbled the ball deliberately to half court, then turned his back to the basket.

Mac Lowe yelled out to Ross on the Thornton Academy bench. The other way.

Lowe said that Josh looked over to him and said, "I got this."

Ross, a junior on the Thornton Academy Unified basketball team, flung the ball over his head, backwards, and into the net, making him a social media star.

A video of his shot, which came in a 58-58 tie with the Unified team on March 8, has been viewed nearly 10,000 times. The shot of the year is the highlight of the high school season.

Josh Ross from Thornton Academy made a backwards half court shot during a Unified game. You will leave with a smile if your school has Unified Hoops.

Mike Cook is on March 15, 2022.

Mike Cook, a Saco resident, said it was the best thing he had seen in a long time. It was done in a Unified game, which made it even more special.

Those who know Josh Ross are not surprised that he made the shot. He practices it and other long-distance shots.

"Josh is who he is, if you tell him he can't do something, he will do it," said a special education teacher and Unified coach at Thornton who has Ross in the classroom and on the court. He will make it happen. He will do it.

Ross was born with Down syndrome. He was always helping her in the classroom. Lowe said he was a great kid and always nice to everyone.

He likes to play basketball. He said he spends hours practicing his shots. It shows. He likes shooting behind the 3-point line, and when he is hot, he doesn't miss often.

He joined the Unified team this year at the suggestion of Smythe, who shared coaching duties with Heidelbaugh.

I knew it would be a good fit for Josh, and I know the impact Unified has had on the students in my classroom and students across the campus. He was ready to leave.

Unified basketball was offered at Maine high schools in 2015. Students with and without disabilities are partners in the sport. The values of sports are promoted by the sport, such as physical activity, teamwork and sportsmanship. Seventeen schools took part in the first year.

Lowe and Ross are on the Unified team. He joined Unified basketball at the urging of his older brother.

Lowe said he enjoys it because it gives students an opportunity they wouldn't otherwise get. It is special when they light up after scoring a basket.

Like Josh Ross. When he gets to play basketball is his favorite time of the day, he said.

Thornton only had two Unified games this year due to a lack of players. The shot by Ross at the end of the first half made a lifelong memory for everyone who was there.

Cook is an ed tech at Thornton Academy. Even though their daughter has graduated, they still go to Unified basketball games. The video was sent to Mike by a friend.

I saw him doing that shot in warm-ups and thought to myself, "Man, that would be awesome if he did that in the game."

Lowe said it was remarkable.

People in the background are jumping in joy as you hear the crowd react on the video. As if it were nothing special, Ross turned to his bench and walked toward them.

His teammates mobbed him when he reached the bench. He was mobbed by the Sanford team.

It was a smile that I had never seen before on him. The crowd. It was amazing.

Lowe said she was so happy and proud of him. I have never seen anyone happy. His smile lit up the room. He gave high-fives to everyone when he walked over to the bench. His smile was the biggest smile I have ever seen.

There was a reason to smile for Ross.

He said he made a basket.
