Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas has been hospitalized for the past two days and is being treated for an infection.

The court said that Thomas' symptoms are getting better and he is being treated with antibiotics.

The Supreme Court said that Thomas was admitted to a hospital in Washington, D.C., on Friday after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Thomas is expected to be released in a day or two.

Thirty years ago, Thomas celebrated on a court moving in his direction.

Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall held the seat that Thomas was nominated to fill. Thomas was a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

The justices have had health problems due to the coronaviruses. The justices returned to the courtroom in the fall after the associate justice tested positive for COVID-19. Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch was sick with a stomach bug.

The extent of Thomas' symptoms was not clear.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments on Monday. Thomas will be involved in considering cases through court records and recordings of oral argument when he can't be there in person or remotely.

Thomas celebrated his 30th anniversary on the Supreme Court last fall. His supporters say that the high court is just beginning to catch up with his positions on guns, abortion and other hot-button issues because of the 6-3 advantage conservatives now enjoy on the court.

One of the longest-serving justices in history, and one of its most prolific, Thomas has become more vocal in the past few years. He spoke up with probing questions after the justices returned to in-person arguments in the courtroom last year, after abandoning his penchant for silence during oral argument.

Thomas is the first justice to ask a question at an argument.

Thomas was raised by his grandparents in the Jim Crow South. He told an audience at Harvard Law School that his childhood friends and neighbors were not lettered people, but that hetreasured education in a way that a person who was hungry would treasure food.
