Cheney: Use of chemical weapons is 'red line' for NATO intervention

Schools, hospitals, and other civilian centers have been bombed by Russian forces. Russia is about to use chemical weapons and global leaders are concerned.

The U.S. believes that Russia is trying to give it justification to use its own chemical or biological weaponry.

The term red line was used by Barack Obama. The president had threatened to bomb Syrian government forces if they used chemical weapons. Putin offered to force Assad to surrender his chemical weapons if Obama promised not to bomb.

The red line became shorthand for weakness and indecision as a result of the deal being accepted. Donald Trump launched a missile strike on Syria after another chemical attack.

President Joe Biden has warned that Russia would suffer severe consequences if chemical weapons were used.

According to POLITICO, more than 2.6 million people have left the country. The city of Mariupol has been under attack, and at least 2,300 people have died.
