Her brother was trying to talk her out of it. She urged Jimmy Hill to delay his trip to Ukraine as she saw Russian tanks at the border. He needed to help his partner who is suffering from multiplesclerosis.

I don't know what I would do if I lost her, he said.

James Hill was killed in a Russian attack on the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv as his partner received treatment at a local hospital. His family says she and her mother are trying to leave the city, but because of her condition, they would need an ambulance to help.

In an interview from Pittsburgh Saturday, Hill's sister called her brother's relationship with Irina a beautiful love story, but unfortunately it has a tragic ending.

She had lost the ability to walk and use her hands because of her illness. She said her brother, who was from Eveleth, Minnesota, had spent months trying to get treatments to stop the progression of the disease and had finally gotten them in February.

The world wouldn't let the invasion happen, said her brother.

The two met while her brother was teaching a class in Ukranian. He knew instantly that he was in love with Jimmy and they spent years talking on the phone.

In the last few weeks, her brother had been thinking of ways to get Ukrainian families to the U.S., and he owned some properties on the website. On the day of his death, her brother decided to stay with her and her mother at the hospital, despite the fact that friends had helped her piece together.

Jimmy was killed while waiting in a breadline, but the family received new information from Jimmy's friends in Ukranian on Saturday.

Jimmy and a friend went to an area near the hospital where they heard buses were going to evacuate people who wanted to leave the city via a safe corridor. Jimmy told a friend that he was going to return to the hospital, as there were more than a thousand people waiting in line. The blast that killed her brother caused a friend to lose hearing in one of her ears, as he was leaving.

The family is still waiting to hear from the US State Department about where his body is.

The death of an American was confirmed by the State Department. The State Department had not given the AP any information as of early Saturday.

In the weeks before his death, Hill wrote on Facebook about the bombing of a city under siege. Each day, he would say he was still alive in the Facebook Messenger group.

Food and supplies were becoming more scarce because of the cut off of electricity and heat. He would go out to wait in line for food and supplies and bring back whatever he could for the hospital staff.

Most patients at the hospital moved to the basement bomb shelter, but Irina and her mother stayed in the upper levels because of the cold.

The mother of the woman told about Jimmy's death, but didn't want to tell her daughter. She said they were hoping for help to get back to their home village southeast of Kyiv, but it was unclear if they could find an ambulance to take them or a safe route for the trip.
