Kevin Tofel spotted the support for variable refresh rates in the Chrome OS 101 Dev Channel. You have to enable a flag at chrome://flags#enable-variable-refresh-rate to access the feature.

This might signal an upgrade for future Chrome OS tablets

The refresh rate of a display can be synchronized with the frames-per-second of the screen. It would make sense that the test of the feature would indicate a smooth gaming experience on Chrome OS, since it was just announced that Steam is coming soon to Chrome OS. There are rumors that the release of three potential gaming-focused Chromebooks could be made stronger with a new Chrome OS flag that adds keyboard support.

On the other hand, an upgraded refresh rate for future Chrome OS tablets is possible. In his review of the HP Chromebook X2 11 and the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5, my colleague Dan Seifert notes that the Chrome OS is clunky when used in tablets. If you want to compete with the likes of Apple andSamsung, you will need a refresh rate of 120Hz for tablets running Chrome OS.
