Three Russian cosmonauts boarded the International Space Station on Friday wearing bright-yellow and blue flight suits, with some likening the fashion choice to the Russian trio's support of Ukraine. The Russian space agency ridiculed that interpretation.

The press service of the Russian Federation said on its Telegram channel that sometimes yellow is just yellow.

Three cosmonauts docked their spaceship with the space station and joined seven other crewmates on Friday.

There is no need to look for hidden signs or symbols in our uniform, Artemyev said in a statement released by the Russian space agency on Saturday. A colour is not something else. It is not connected to Ukraine. Artemyev said that they would have to recognize the rights to the yellow sun in the blue sky.

The director-general of the Russian space agency said the cosmonauts had no sympathy for Ukrainian nationalists, according to a report.

On Friday, Artemyev said the team chose the bright yellow because there was so much of that material in storage.

The Ukrainian flag has always included yellow, but it has changed over time. The coat of arms of the largest city in Western Ukraine was the inspiration for the colors of the first national flag. The flag had horizontal stripes of yellow on top of blue and the coat of arms had a golden lion over a blue shield. The Ukrainian Republic adopted a new flag in 1918 that had reversed stripes to symbolize blue skies over golden wheat fields.

The Red Banner of the Soviet Union was added to the bottom of the flag at one point in 1949. The nationalist blue-yellow banner was brought into existence by the country after it became independent from the Soviet Union.
