McConnell said on Sunday that Republicans overwhelmingly support providing aid to Ukraine and that party members who back Russian President Putin are lonely voices within the GOP.
During an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation," the veteran Kentucky lawmaker expressed his support for additional aid for Ukraine to fight back against Russian forces. He said that the US should rethink its approach to the conflict in light of the success that the Ukrainians have had.
Margaret Brennan asked McConnell about Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, who was videotaped calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a thug.
There are some lonely voices out there that are in a different place, he said. I think most of my members would have voted for it.
The vast majority of the Republican Party is behind the Ukrainians and wants the president to take these steps quicker. Some voices may be off the side. I wouldn't pay much attention to them.
Kevin McCarthy rejected Cawthorn's comments regarding Zelenskyy.
He said that if there was any thug in this world, it was Putin.
The California Republican was still committed to supporting Cawthorn.
A week ago, she recorded a video on Facebook where she rejected America's involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
She said that if we truly care about suffering and death on our television screens, we cannot fund more of it by sending money and weaponry to fight a war they cannot possibly win.
During his European trip, Biden must make it clear that the US believes that Ukraine can win against Russian forces, said McConnell on Sunday.
McConnell said that the president needs to step up his game.
Ukrainians have killed more Russians in three weeks than we have in 20 years. The way to win is for us to get the defensive weapons systems to the Ukrainians as quickly as possible.
$13.6 billion in aid for Ukraine was approved by Congress.
McConnell said that the US should continue to aid the country.
He said that if they need more, they should be given more.
