Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is unwilling to make compromises in negotiations with Putin.
Zelenskyy said on CNN that there are compromises for which we cannot be ready as an independent state. They did not greet the Russian soldiers with flowers. They have welcomed them with bravery. They have brought weapons with them.
Zelenskyy conceded that Putin wants assurance from Ukraine that it will remain neutral and not join NATO. Putin annexed the peninsula after a pro-Russian president was ousted. The rebels in eastern Ukraine were supported by the Kremlin.
The status of the Donbas region is one of the more challenging demands. Russia has occupied the peninsula of Crimea, as well as two other regions in the Donbas, which have been recognized by Russia as independent states.
Putin has railed against the efforts of Ukraine to become part of NATO, presenting it as a threat to Russia. Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Russia would not have attacked if Ukraine had joined NATO.
Zelenskyy has continued to call for peace talks but has remained consistent in his priorities, which include ending the war, security guarantees, sovereignty, and restoration of territorial integrity.
Zelenskyy told CNN Russia cannot curry favor with the citizens of another country.
Zelenskyy said that you cannot just make a president of another country to use force.
The Ukrainian president has warned that if peace talks fail, this will be a third World War.
His comments came after it was announced that US President Joe Biden will travel to Europe for an emergency NATO meeting. The US president is not expected to visit Ukraine.
