It makes sense to give some thought to what you are lying on because you are going to sleep on a mattress for 23 years. There are questionable materials in mattresses. Nonorganic mattresses can contain flame retardants, such as TCEP. One way to avoid harm is to get a mattress made from natural, organic materials. These mattresses are usually less harmful. Most eco-friendly mattresses are made of wool, natural latex, and cotton. The construction is similar to conventional mattresses, but without the chemicals.

We have slept on every single mattress tested by the WIRED Gear team over the past few years. These are our favorites right now and we are always testing more. We recommend hybrid mattresses with a core of individually wrapped springs because they feel more supportive and have better air flow so they don't sleep as hot. Unless specified, all of the prices shown are for queen-size models.

The only mattress my wife and I agree on is the Avocado Green hybrid. I prefer a firm mattress to the soft one she likes. This model is both, without being too much of either. There are no sagging or other issues after nearly two years of sleeping on it. Jeffrey Van Camp liked the Avocado mattress that he tested.

If you prefer a soft feel, there is a pillow-top option, or you can add a mattress topper. We haven't tested the vegan hybrid mattress and the no-spring organic natural latex foam mattress that Avocado sells.

The Avocado is made from organic latex, organic wool, and organic cotton. It is not toxic. According to the company, it contains no foams or chemicals. In India, the company co-owns an organic latex processing facility and owns its own sheep farms. California assembles the mattresses.

There is a one-year trial, 25-year warranty, and free shipping on all of the mattresses. The Avocado arrives compressed like other mattress-in-a-box options. The company is a certified B Corporation that purchases enough offsets to be able to say it is a carbon-negative business.

A more affordable mattress.

Awara Natural Mattress

Awara.

Awara Natural Hybrid Mattress

The Awara mattress is made from a variety of materials. It was not as comfortable as the Birch, but it is more affordable. Awara's mattress is supportive and bouncy, but the springs can be felt more readily than in other mattresses, while the edges are quite rigid. Even things out could be helped by a topnotcher.

WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe said that Awara's vacuum-sealed mattress resulted in less odor than other brands. The soft mattress fabric didn't run too hot or cold. This is a good pick for a hybrid mattress that is easier on the budget.

My pursuit of an eco-friendly mattress began with my kids. I care more about what they are sleeping on than what I am sleeping on. I love the mattress, but it is not cheap. I bought a cheaper mattress for my kids. The Kiwi is very similar to a fruit. It is a hybrid mattress with natural materials and certified organic cotton.

The two-sided option makes theKiwi appealing to kids. It costs a little more upfront, but being able to flip it over extends its life, which is handy if your kids think beds are trampolines.
