It turns out that the problem is that everyone you meet will proclaim they have manifest you. It's a feature, I suppose, rather than a bug, because when you believe that desires can be made real by concentration alone, and when that desire is for a journalist to cover the company you recently set up, then, well.

The practice of reincarnation dates back to the New Thought movement of the 19th century and is still going strong today thanks to the success of The Secret and Oprah Winfrey.

In 2020, the latest surge was down to Gen Z, as searches for "manifesting" went up 600%. The number of posts on the #manifest and #manifestation has increased. The views of content on TikTok have gone past 9 billion. Teens became online celebrities by giving advice. Cara Delevingne said she had a baby.

It turned out that it was more than just a teen phenomenon. Real-life courses and retreats began to offer to teach it and promising in return, well, everything. There were courses forManifesting Creativity andManifesting Happiness. You canManifest Your Financial Freedom andManifest Your Dream partner. There were events for people with issues with the Law of Attraction and for people who needed a leg-up.

I settled on an event called Manifest 2022, which was both all-inclusive and unthreatening. I met the founder, Moon Onyx Starr, at a coffee shop in Mayfair, central London. Starr wore close-cropped, bleached hair and spoke with unblinking sincerity of someone who always carries crystals that promote success.

Starr worked for a jewellery brand before the Pandemic. She felt displaced, lost and confused because she had been ignoring deep-rooted issues. She says she was on the verge of a breakdown. She started reading about manifesting after reading self-help books.

‘I totally manifested the retreat… the facilitators were manifested… you were manifested…’: Moon Onyx Starr.

The idea is that manifesting takes the idea of a positive mental attitude and runs with it. Positive thoughts can make things happen when focused on specific goals and outcomes.

You can only manifest in line with your higher purpose, which is one of the key caveat's.

Starr set up her retreat company, Over The Moon Retreats, last spring, and soon discovered events that focused solely on manifesting sold out almost instantly.

I laugh.

Starr says, "I'm not joking."

On a crisp Saturday, I found myself on a yoga mat surrounded by 20 or so other people at a festival. These weren't the Gen Zers making things go crazy on TikTok. They were mostly women. Starr welcomed us all to the day, saying that whatever you wish to manifest, be it love, money, success, prosperity, spiritual development, it's coming your way.

It’s coming your way, it’s your time, you’re ready to level up your life

We were invited to tell the rest of the group what we wanted to do. Some spoke for 15 minutes or so, detailing life stories defined by trauma, while others barely spoke a sentence. They talked about abortion, abuse, addictions, depression, panic attacks, and cancer.

The epidemic came up again and again. Many were stuck in one way or another. People had moved, changed jobs, and had crises. Many of the people in attendance had split up with their partners. Almost everyone wanted to manifest either self-love or abundance, a catch-all term that can mean more than money. Everyone felt lost.

People have sought answers in faith before. After the First World War, people found comfort in the thought that death wasn't the end. Sir Arthur was a supporter. The authorities had to use archaic Witchcraft and Vagrancy Acts in order to target medium. Positive thinking can lead to improved mental and physical health according to recent studies. Commercialisation followed.

Silicon Valley took astrology into the app age by tapping into the ennui of the younger generation. Sanctuary, a subscription service, is said to be worth upwards of $2 billion. All promise a brighter future. It requires you to put on a happy face.

Big Zodiac is said to currently be worth upwards of $2bn

I think that's something that's really been pushed on us and celebrated throughout history, says Dr Whitney Goodman, author of Toxic Positivity, which looks at the dangers. It can cause people to think there is something wrong with them, like they are not.

It is religion without altruism at its heart. When you wish for the wellbeing of others, traditional prayer is good, but it's frowned upon when you want a new partner or a car. Most sessions end with palms pressed together in a prayer-like pose, though we are told to give thanks.

We did an exercise before lunch. The idea was to look at the thing we want to manifest and at ourselves from an outsider's perspective, in case we hadlimiting beliefs. The teacher is also a doctor and a part-time manifesting guru. She had vegan salads.

She was always working or travelling. When it struck, she was single, and I had nothing but time on my hands.

I thought I was healed. I found him! He was a gift from the universe.

Are they still together?

We are not, but we are very good friends.

I was learning to look on the bright side of things. If you believe that events are the direct result of your manifestations, then the logic is that even negative consequences must be the result of them, too. You give yourself over to fate, but you are your own person. The boyfriend gave the doctor what he needed to learn next.

And I thought, I’m healed! There he is, I found him! He was my gift from the universe!

She says that she often combines traditional medical treatment with spiritual advice at her day job. She had a cancer patient who wasn't responding to the various treatments they had been trying.

I know I can be sued for asking this, but I'm going to invite you to get a different doctor.

She discovered that the woman's mother had died of the same disease and that she felt like she was being held back.

She says she hopes the patient responds better to treatment.

It's difficult to quantify the business of manifesting. The growth subsection of the market is said to be worth a staggering 1.5tr dollars. There were a variety of crystals on sale, some of which were set in jewellery.

I talked to Natalie Benmayor, founder of Capsule Eleven, about the latter. Benmayor's brand was launched during the Pandemic. She started seeing the numbers 11-11 everywhere and realized they had special significance. She had an idea for a company that sold high-end jewellery items.

The 11:11 Pendant is one of the most popular items on the website, but it also has a range of other items that ward off or attract something.

And I swear to God it works, as I got the brand off the ground so quickly

She says it works, as she got the brand off the ground quickly. Benmayor was attending in a personal capacity. She had been out of work. She'd been through a lot of therapy, but still felt stuck.

The main event of the day was a session led by a young woman named Roxy Marrone, who spoke about her mother being a shaman.

Marrone set up her own company. She realized she was giving her friends everything they needed when she started hosting rituals for them at her family home. Gen Z felt their fate was not theirs. Taking back control became a way to manifest.

She says that people needed it, and that many started crying.

She says that her business is not about making money, but about helping someone. I am here to sell you something that will change your life, but I have to check the website first.

Gen Z manifest has taken on some strange quirks. The method of writing a boy's name down many times a day is taught by teen manifesters. A huge check of $118,811 is about to land in your hand tomorrow, according to specific posts on the social media platform. Under which hundreds of people write Affirm, followed by their choice of emojis, I contact a few users to check in. Teens on TikTok say that listening to certain sounds every day helps them get what they want.

I used this sound for one week straight and just got the cat I’ve been asking for

It's indicative of a belief that everything bad that happens is your fault. You didn't manifest your life well enough. It's something Dr Goodman sees more and more with her patients.

She said that it can feed into and deepen the belief that bad things happen to people who have been abused.

Marrone says she is always getting messages from young people asking how they can manifest their goals. What do I do with crystals?

Doesn't Marrone worry that this can be a problem for young people?

On any social media there is always a bad side, but this is not an bad thing to promote.

As we start our session, we begin with a part of the universe that doesn't get the headlines, but which I feel would have been healthy in the epidemic regardless of your beliefs. We were told before we began that we needed to raise our vibrations, which sounds complicated, but the reality was sweetly humble.

We were told to think of the small things we were grateful for and to think about them every day. We closed our eyes. Marrone asked us to make sure our feet were touching the floor, she told us she often gives thanks to her breakfast.

She said that we had to meet the universe halfway in order to achieve things. She told us to write down three things that we wanted to manifest by the end of the year, and to close our eyes and think about each in as much detail as possible.

She said the key was to focus on how the house would make us feel. I focused. I felt it. We breathed in through our noses and mouths. It felt good, I have to admit. It didn't last. It felt good briefly.

I have to admit: it felt good. It didn’t last. But briefly, it felt good

I wondered if Marrone ever set limits, what if a teen wanted to build a mansion by the end of the year?

She said that everyone is capable of everything, but if you don't believe it, you're not doing yourself a disservice. It starts with self-esteem.

If they wanted to be the first astronauts on Mars, what would they do?

I would suggest that you think of something that is realistic for you to achieve by the end of the year, but not something that you are afraid you won't achieve.

I asked what some of her recent manifestations were. She said she was setting up her company. She said that she had an article written about her inHarper's Bazaar.

She said that she was more than welcome to do a solo piece on her. I can almost feel it in her voice.
