Providence is headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 20 years after a dominating win over the Spiders in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Despite his team holding a lead for the entire game, Cooley said it didn't hit him that the Friars would advance until just before the final buzzer.

After a disappointing exit from the Big East tournament, questions about the team's staying power persisted after the best seed in school history came into the tournament. In the semifinals, the Big East champ was beaten by a score of 85-58.
Providence put together its best performance of the season in the effort against the Spiders after a 66-57 win against South Dakota State. The 28-point margin was the largest in Providence tournament history.

It is a testament to their emotional maturity and their physical talent that they are still here.

The Friars made their sixth NCAA tournament appearance. Providence has lost in the second round of the tournament in three of the last four years.
An impressive and historic season will continue in 2022. The 1972- 73 team that went to the Final Four had the second-most wins in a single season in team history. Two of the five losses this season came against the same opponent.

The Providence fans in attendance started chanting "We want Kansas" as the game came to a close.
Providence is used to hearing the doubters.
"We weren't that bad last time I checked," he said. They cannot do that. I am a person who appreciates what I have and not what I don't. I appreciate the opportunity. There is 94 feet of opportunity when there is 40 minutes in a game.
