Belmont upsets Oregon after Sedona Prince can't convert buzzer-beater in 2OT (0:27)

The game could have gone into triple overtime as Oregon's Sedona Prince missed a last second shot. (0:27)

12:40 AM ET

The field for the women's NCAA tournament has been cut to 32. Each of the top seeds had an easy path to the second round. The top four seeds in each region are still alive, but for teams such as the LSU Tigers and the Oklahoma Sooners. That does not mean everything is going according to form. There are six double-digit seeds in the second round. The last two NCAA tournaments combined had as many as that.

Over the first two days of the season, the Big 12 has a perfect record and this has been a good year for the league. The SEC, the highest-rated conference in the country, went 4-4. The Ole Miss Lady Rebels were upset by the SEC.

The reseeding of the women's NCAA tournament is almost a necessity because of all of this. The Kansas Jayhawks are one of the teams that earned an adjustment. The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles should not have been a 12 seed. For the second year in a row, the Bruins are a first-round winner. The Bluejays offense made people notice. We can fix those seeds.

You can find a complete look at the Sunday and Monday games on the websites of the networks. You can check your Women's Tournament Challenge brackets by visiting this link. Two brackets are perfect through the first 32 games.

No. 1 seeds

South Carolina football team.

Original Seed: No. 1 overall

First round: Defeated No. 16 Howard 79-21

The women's NCAA tournament games are underway. Play a tournament.

It was a tough task for Howard to play South Carolina. Having to play a team that had been stewing about a loss in its last game made the mountain even taller. South Carolina put its arms around this game because of that. Howard had four points at the break. The fourth quarter of the SEC tournament championship game was when the focus of the Gamecocks seemed to be missing. South Carolina was locked in against the MEAC champ and only allowed 21 points in the game, which was the lowest in a women's game in NCAA tournament history. A team that is going to be playing two weekends from now needs that.

The next game is against Miami on Sunday, 3 p.m. ABC

The Cardinal is from the state of California.

Original Seed: No. 1

First round: Defeated No. 16 Montana State 78-37

Fran Belibi dunked. In the first quarter, the Cardinal did not give up a point. The score could be named by Stanford. It was exactly what a No. 1 seed is supposed to do. Hannah Jump led the way with 15 points, and Haley Jones only shot 2-of-9 from the field, but no one on the roster had a huge game. Twelve different players scored for the Cardinal. Brink led the way on the glass with 11. If you pick a statistical category, it will be dominated. The Cardinal had a 21-game winning streak.

The next game is against Kansas on Sunday at 9 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The NC State Wolfpack is a basketball team.

Original Seed: No. 1

First round: Defeated No. 16 Longwood 96-68

NC State needed some time to get going against the 16th seed. A pair of Diamond Johnson 3-pointers highlighted a 17-0 run that put the Wolfpack in control. NC State has reached the second round of the NCAA tournament in four of the last five years, and it was easy to see why.

The next game is against Kansas State. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The Louisville Cards.

Original Seed: No. 1

First round: Defeated No. 16 Albany 83-51

After a loss in the quarterfinals of the tournament, the Cards hadn't played in two weeks. Is it Rust? Not a lot. Louisville made shots early and often against the Great Danes. Louisville shot 52.4% from the field and had 44 points in the paint, and coach Jeff Walz didn't have to play anyone over 25 minutes. The most rested team in the tournament might be the Cards. The best sign of all is that the struggles of the first half of the season are behind her. She has averaged 17. In her last nine games, she has 6 points per game and 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting.

The next game is against Gonzaga on Sunday at 7 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

No. 2 seeds

The Bears are from Baylor.

Original Seed: No. 2

First round: Defeated No. 15 Hawai'i 89-49

For 20 minutes, the Big West champion was not in danger. The third quarter came. The Bears' physical superiority took over after the defense went to another level. The Bears made 12 field goals, six of which were from point-blank range, in the first quarter and led 34-8. The state was 3-of-20 from the field in the third. Jordan Lewis was 7-for-8 shooting and 23 points, and NaLyssa Smith had 21 points and 14 Rebounds, as the coach got her first NCAA tournament win.

In the first round of the women's NCAA tournament, the University of Connecticut defeated the Mercer.

The University of Connecticut's men's basketball team.

Original Seed: No. 2

First round: Defeated No. 15 Mercer 83-38

It was methodical and overpowering, the way we usually see it against inferior opponents. The Bears were held to 15 points in the second half and none in the third quarter. Much has been made of the return of the entire rotation of talented players, but the defense is the reason for the team's success. Only one of the last nine opponents has scored over 50 points, and six did not. The team shot 23.2% from the field and committed 18 turnovers. Christyn Williams was the leading scorer with 13 points.

The next game is against UCF on Monday at 9 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The Texas Longhorns.

Original Seed: No. 2

First round: Defeated No. 15 Fairfield 70-52

The Longhorns have a formula for success that starts with their defense. The Stags were competitive, even out scoring Texas in the second half, but 22 turnovers and a 10-rebound deficit were too much to overcome. Extra possessions helped the Longhorns overcome their shooting percentage. Freshman Aaliyah Moore had a huge performance. She did not have a double-double all season. The 11 assists by Rori Harmon were key.

The next game is against Utah on Sunday, 5 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The Iowa Hawkeyes.

Original Seed: No. 2

First round: Defeated No. 15 Illinois State 98-58

Iowa scored 98 points despite a slow start. The Hawkeyes relied on what they do best: put the ball in the basket. The leader in field goal percentage made more than half of its shots. Iowa is trying to be the first team since Connecticut in 2016 to lead the country in both categories. If she wasn't making those kinds of shots, it would be amazing.

The next game is against Creighton on Sunday at 1 p.m. ABC

No. 3 seeds

Indiana Hoosiers.

Original Seed: No. 3

First round: Defeated No. 14 Charlotte 85-51

The sputtering that Indiana was experiencing at the end of the regular season seems a long time ago. The Hoosiers lost three in a row and four of five before they made it to the Big Ten tournament final. The domination of the 49ers on Saturday is now official. Charlotte was never allowed to believe that this would be competitive because only one Hoosier failed to make at least half of her shots. This was the ninth game in whichHolmes has been back after recovering from a knee injury. Her 19 points and eight rebound is her best performance in that time.

The Michigan Wolverines.

Original Seed: No. 3

First round: Defeated No. 14 American 74-39

The Michigan defense had been inconsistent at the end of the season. The long layoff might be what the Michigan needed. After they lost in the Big Ten quarterfinals, all that saved energy went into shutting down the Eagles. The offense took a few minutes to get going, but the defense was ready to go from the start. American scored 13 first-half points and the Eagles had 39 in the game. Her 15th double-double of the season was her 24 points and 11 rebound.

LSU advanced thanks to a late 3-pointer.

The LSU Tigers.

Original Seed: No. 3

First round: Defeated No. 14 Jackson State 83-77

Kim Mulkey might not be able to sleep Saturday. Jackson State, which entered the NCAA tournament with a nation-best 21-game winning streak, turned into a near giant killer when the Tigers led by 17 and looked on their way to a routine first-round victory. The Lady Tigers went on a 24-5 run to take the lead and they were still on top with 2:44 left in the game. LSU finished on a 10-3 run after two baskets by Pointer. The heavily favored Tigers had to take a deep breath. The key to the tournament success was Pointer, who finished with 25 points.

The next game is against Ohio State. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

The Iowa State Cyclones are a team.

Original Seed: No. 3

First round: Defeated No. 14 UT Arlington 78-71

The only Big 12 team that had a harder time than the Cyclones was Texas. Iowa State needed a fourth-quarter rally and some key plays by Emily Ryan down the stretch to hold off UT Arlington. The Lady Mavs were the better team and they were credited with beating the Cyclones. Starr Jacobs, the Sun Belt Player of the Year, who started her career at Houston before going the junior college route for two years, showed that she is a Power 5 talent with 19 points. Joens, Ryan and Lexi Donarski played all 40 minutes, which could be interesting to watch in the physical game against Georgia.

The next game is against Georgia on Sunday at 8 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

No. 4 seeds

The Maryland Terrapins are a team.

Original Seed: No. 4

First round: Defeated No. 13 Delaware 102-71

It's hard to believe that a Maryland team that led the nation in scoring a year ago and was sixth this year could have a three-game stretch in which it only averaged 59 points. In the final three games of the season, that happened. The Maryland team came back Friday, despite some concern from coach Frese. The five starters scored in double figures. After being bothered by injury and ineffectiveness for much of February, Ashley Owusu looked like her old self again with 24 points on an efficient 10-of-14 shooting, with six assists.

The next game is against Florida Gulf Coast. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

Tennessee Lady Volunteers.

Original Seed: No. 4

First round: Defeated No. 13 Buffalo 80-67

Tennessee paid dividends because it played to its strengths. The Bulls could not rebound from their loss to the Lady Vols. That was the difference. The Lady Vols were fourth in the country in rebound rate. The difference in made free throws was due to the 55-38 advantage Tennessee had on the boards. Alexus Dye had a combined 34 points, while Tamari Key had 11. The Lady Vols will still be in the 4th seed despite not having leading scorer Jordan Horston back and continuing to have turnover problems. They are ranked 325th in the country in total turnovers.

Shaina put up an assertive and-1 bucket.

The Arizona Cats.

Original Seed: No. 4

First round: Defeated No. 13 UNLV 72-67

The final score didn't show the angst that was felt in Tucson. One of the few top-four seeds that was close to losing in the first round was the Wildcats. UNLV, a large favorite, led for most of the game and as late as eight minutes left. Arizona was playing in its first NCAA tournament home game when Shaina Pellington scored 30 points. After missing four games with a shoulder injury, the Wildcats welcomed back Cate Reese. Her 16 points were crucial in disposing of a UNLV team that outshot and outrebounded Arizona.

The next game is against North Carolina. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

The Oklahoma Sooners.

Original Seed: No. 4

First round: Defeated No. 13 IUPUI 76-72

The biggest weakness of the Sooners all season has been interior defense, and IUPUI's Macee Williams posed a problem. Oklahoma kept Williams in check. Williams finished with 15 points, which was less than the 21 points of Oklahoma's own Madi Williams. The Sooners are in the second round for the first time in five years because of her and Taylor Robertson. The Oklahoma-Notre Dame game in round two is expected to be a good one.

The next game is against Notre Dame. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

No. 5 seeds

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Original Seed: No. 5

First round: Defeated No. 12 UMass 89-78

A triple-double from Olivia Miles, 58.7% shooting and 38-22 advantage on the boards, and Notre Dame still couldn't shake UMass until the closing minutes. The offense of the Minutewomen was almost as good as that of the Irish, especially with 31 points from the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Sam Breen. It was the second NCAA tournament triple-double in Notre Dame history, and the Irish continued to rely on their offense, as Miles had 12 points, 10 rebound and 11 assists.

The next game is against Oklahoma on Monday, 6 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

The Tar Heels of North Carolina.

Original Seed: No. 5

First round: Defeated No. 12 Stephen F. Austin 79-66

SFA, with its up-tempo, pressing style, was going to be difficult to play against, warned the North Carolina coach. It looked like this could be another double-digit seed pulling an upset for three quarters. Then came the fourth quarter. With Deja Kelly scoring nine of her 28 points in the final 10 minutes, North Carolina was able to get out of the first round for the first time since 2015. This was the second year in a row that SFA played in the NCAA tournament. The Ladyjacks took Georgia Tech to overtime.

The next game is against Arizona on Monday at 10 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

Ohio State has a football team.

Original Seed: No. 6

First round: Defeated No. 11 Missouri State 63-56

In a game in which they were out-rebounded 51-33, and made 5 of 20 3-pointers, the Buckeyes survived. The difference in the game was a 23-6 run at the end of the first half, fueled by a relentless full-court press, and a 13-6 finish. It would be the first team to win a second game in the First Four if Missouri State had done a better job protecting the ball. Ohio State scored 25 points from 22 turnovers. Jacy Sheldon hit a few layups off her five steals, and that was a big part of her game-high 25 points.

The next game is against LSU on Monday at 8 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

The Lady Dogs of Georgia.

Original Seed: No. 6

First round: Defeated No. 11 Dayton 70-54

In the First Four game, Dayton made 17 3-pointers. Georgia allowed the Flyers to shoot from deep. The defense of the Lady Dogs was very good. Georgia didn't do anything special on offense. It was enough to control the game from start to finish. Coach Taylor turned to her veterans. Georgia won an NCAA tournament game for the third time under Taylor. She hasn't gotten past the second round yet.

The next game is against Iowa State. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

No. 6 seeds

The Utah Utes.

Original Seed: No. 7

First round: Defeated No. 10 Arkansas 92-69

The Utes won an NCAA tournament game for the first time in five years. Utah had its best offensive game of the season against a quality opponent. The Razorbacks, who typically rely on their own shooting abilities, had no answer for the young Utes. Utah made 9 of 12 3-pointers and was never seriously challenged.

The next game is against Texas on Sunday, 5 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The Knights of UCF.

Original Seed: No. 7

First round: Defeated No. 10 Florida 69-52

It sounds weird, but Florida doesn't see defense like the Knights in the SEC. Without injured Kiki Smith, the Gators only shot 30% from the field. Florida didn't have its primary scorer and creator to penetrate a defense that allows a nation-low 47.5 points per game. Losing center Faith Dut late in the first half was too much to overcome. It was the first NCAA tournament win in program history for the Knights, and they had their first win over the Gators.

Monday, 9 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The Kansas Jayhawks.

Original Seed: No. 8

First round: Defeated No. 9 Georgia Tech 77-58

The Yellow Jackets ran out of gas. Georgia Tech was handed its worst loss of the season by Kansas. Georgia Tech lost five of its last seven games as it played with a six- or seven-player rotation for most of the second half of the season. The Jayhawks won their first NCAA tournament game in four years, out scoring the Yellow Jackets 64-36 over the final three quarters. The Jayhawks did it with balance and defense. Four Kanas players scored in double figures, led by Holly Kersgieter with 19 points.

The next game is against Cardinal on Sunday, 9 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The Miami Hurricanes.

Original Seed: No. 8

First round: Defeated No. 9 South Florida 78-66

If the Hurricanes get into the NCAA tournament, Kate Meier is a good bet to play a second game. The head coach has a 6-3 record in first-round games. There are multiple ways the Hurricanes can win. The leading scorer in the game,Kelsey Marshall, only got 10 field goal attempts and 12 points, but the bench contributed 29 points. Miami erased second-half deficits in all three of its wins. It was a fast start on Friday. Miami took a 24-11 lead after 10 minutes and simply answered any South Florida spurt the rest of the game.

The next game is against South Carolina. ABC

No. 7 seeds

There is a team called the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Original Seed: No. 9

First round: Defeated No. 8 Nebraska 68-55

The time of year is the right time to play your best basketball. In the title game of the West Coast Conference tournament, a much better performance was delivered by the Zags than they had in the previous two games. The Cornhuskers were never able to break through after the first six points of the second half. Truong was the point guard and she controlled the game from there.

The next game is against Louisville on Sunday at 7 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.

Original Seed: No. 12

First round: Defeated No. 5 Virginia Tech 84-81

The Eagles should have been a No. 7 seed. The committee had to play a team that was completely over qualified for a 12-seed in the first round. The game ended that way. FGCU made 15 3-point shots against the Hokies. FCGU mitigated the disadvantage by only committing three turnovers, as the Eagles knew they had no answer for center Elizabeth Kitley, who went off for a career-high 42 points. The Eagles were a little bit better because they played to their strengths. When the offense breaks down and the 3-pointer is unavailable, it helps to have an all-around talent like Kierstan Bell. Bell, who finished with a team-high 22 points, turned a brilliant individual move into a layup that gave FGCU a 76-74 lead, one that the Eagles never relinquished.

The next game is against Maryland on Sunday, 3 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

The Bluejays are from Creighton.

Original Seed: No. 10

First round: Defeated No. 7 Colorado 84-74

The Colorado defense has a top 30 rating. The motion offense carved it up. The only time this season the Buffs allowed more than 84 points was when Oregon scored 86, but it took double overtime to get there. That is not surprising. Emma Ronsiek and Lauren Jensen are two of the players that Jim Flanery brings to his teams. The Bluejays are fifth in the nation in points per 100 possessions. Iowa, where Jensen began her career, leads the country in that category.

The next game is against Iowa on Sunday at 1 p.m. ABC

The South Dakota Coyotes are a team.

Original Seed: No. 10

First round: Defeated No. 7 Ole Miss 75-61

The seniors decided to return for another year to try and win an NCAA tournament game. The mission was accomplished. The defense of the Rebels was broken by the Coyotes, who shot 55.8%. Lamb and Sjerven each had 20 points. The defense that was 10th in the country in points allowed per game was just as effective against an SEC opponent as it has been against the Summit League. Coach Plitzuweit had a strategy that rendered Austin a nonfactor. Despite her size, Austin had just nine points on 3 of 16 shooting.

The next game is against Bears on Sunday, 6 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).

No. 8 seeds

Kansas State has a basketball team.

Original Seed: No. 9

First round: Defeated No. 8 Washington State 50-40

The offense of Kansas State was struggling in the first half with just 17 points. Adjustments were made. The ball found Lee more in the second half. The offense never exploded, but Lee finished with 15 rebound and 20 points, half of which came from the free throw line, as the Cats advanced for the first time in two years. Neither team will keep this one in their archives. Kansas State was the more accurate of the two when it came to shooting the ball. Despite all the upsets, Kansas State is still a No. 8 seed.

The next game is against NC State. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

There is a school called the Princeton Tigers.

Original Seed: No. 11

First round: Defeated No. 6 Kentucky 69-62

Kentucky had 10 straight wins. It was hotter in Princeton. The Tigers have won 18 in a row. The seeds say that the game was close, but the better team prevailed. Since 2000, the most points from an Ivy League player in the NCAA tournament has been scored by the one who is currently in the tournament, by the one who is currently in the tournament, by the one who is currently in the tournament, by the one who is currently in the tournament, by The Tigers ran their offense precisely at all the right times and never gave the Cats a chance to recover from their 19 turnovers. Rhyne Howard had a Kentucky career that ended with just 4 of 14 shooting and 17 points.

The Wildcats of Villanova.

Original Seed: No. 11

First round: Defeated No. 6 BYU 61-57

You won't be impressed by the Wildcats. They are difficult to play against. Whether it was under Harry Perretta for 42 years or now, the offense runs a disciplined one that makes open shots and doesn't make many mistakes. The first of two No. 6 seeds to fall was BYU. In a game of conference players of the year, the Big East's Maddy Siegrist got the better of the WCC's Shaylee Gonzales with 25 points. The defense rose to the occasion and held Gonzales to just eight points.

The Bruins are from Belmont.

Original Seed: No. 12

First round: Defeated No. 5 Oregon 73-70, 2OT

The Bruins played Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Ole Miss and UCF. They won a first-round game as a 12 seed. They were prepared for the NCAA tournament and it paid off once more. Last year, Belmont defeated Gonzaga. This time it might have been better. Four straight trips to the Sweet 16 was what the Ducks were coming off of. The Bruins didn't have an answer for Nyara Sabally, who had 31 points, 12 rebound, and 40 points in the paint. Twelve 3-pointers helped. Tuti Jones made all four of her shots from deep.
