More than 1,000 people were sheltered in a theater in Mariupol after it was bombed by Russian forces, according to Ukrainian officials.
Russia destroyed the Mariupol Drama Theater and attacked women, children, and the elderly who were hiding in a bomb shelter, according to city council officials.
Satellite images taken prior to the bombing showed the world had been written in Russian on the ground at the front and back of the theater.
Some survivors emerged as of Thursday, but the theater suffered severe damage from the attack.
130 people were rescued from the theater on Friday, but 1,300 remained trapped, according to the Ukrainian parliament's commissioner for human rights. The numbers of casualties and deaths are not known.
Satellite images obtained by Insider show the extent of the damage, with most of the roof gone.
