UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson drew a comparison between Britain's vote to leave the European Union and the fight against a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

During a speech at the Conservative Party's Spring Conference in Blackpool, Johnson said that the people of this country, like the people of Ukraine, choose freedom every time.

I don't believe that the British people were hostile to foreigners when they voted to leave the EU. They wanted to be free, to do things differently, and for this country to be able to run itself.

The 2016 vote in which a slim majority voted in favor of leaving the EU was discussed by Johnson. The British people chose to get vaccine against COVID-19.

Other UK and European political figures criticized his comments.

The president of the European People's Party called the comparison "insane" and the former prime minister of Belgium called Johnson's remarks "offend" Ukrainians.

The leader of the UK's Liberal Democrats said that Johnson was a national embarrassment.

He said that comparing a referendum to women and children fleeing bombs is an insult to every Ukrainian.

There is a bit where voting in a free and fair referendum isn't comparable with risking your life to defend your country against invasion and the awkward fact the Ukrainian.

After the invasion began, Zelenskyy applied to become a member of the EU.

Insider did not get a response from the office of the prime minister.
