Robert Tonyan is expected to return for a fifth season with the Packers.
According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers are bringing back the 27-year-old on a one-year contract. Tonyan has been in Green Bay for four years.
Tonyan was retained by the Packers after they traded star wide receiver Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders. It is important for Green Bay to keep weapons that Rodgers is comfortable with.
Tonyan was Rodgers favorite red-zone target during the 2020 season when he had a career year and tied for the NFL lead in receiving touchdown by a tight end with 11. He had career highs in catches and yards that year.
Tonyan had his season cut short by a torn knee in Week 8. He had 18 catches for 204 yards and two scores.
Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette pointed out that Tonyan's injury likely impacted his market in free agency, paving the way for the Packers to bring him back on a team-friendly deal.
It is not known if Tonyan will be able to recover in time for Week 1 of the regular season. While he is out, Green Bay will keep rotating their tight ends.
