According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Cleveland Browns restructured the contract of Amari Cooper in order to free up more than 15 million dollars in salary-cap space.
Most of Cooper's $20 million base salary will be a signing bonus, and two void years in his deal will help ease the financial burden on Cleveland.
The Houston Texans agreed to sell Deshaun to the Cleveland Browns.
The team subsequently gave him a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed extension. The contract is structured to limit the impact on the cap.
Tom Pelissero @TomPelisseroSo Cleveland is set to pay its two new additions $66 million cash in 2022, but they’ll count only about $15 million combined on the cap.
The change of Cooper'sPayout helps Cleveland finalize theWatson trade, at which point the extension will go into effect.
The bill for Cooper still has to be paid by the Browns eventually.
He had a $20 million cap hit in the first three years of his contract, but Cleveland will have to absorb only $4.9 million in the next three years. The first of the two void years will cost the four-time Pro Bowler $8.6.
Since returning to the NFL in 1999, the Browns have only two playoff trips to their name, and they haven't won a championship since 1964.
Despite the fact that he is facing 22 civil lawsuits stemming from allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, they are still desperate to have a winning team.
This is likely to be a big change for the franchise. Maybe the quarterback who leads Cleveland to the Super Bowl is the one who leads the team to the game.
Should the trades fail to work out, the team will have to kick the can down the road financially.
