The Buffalo Bills are getting a seventh-round pick from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Case Keenum, according to Tom Pelissero.
The deal comes on the heels of the Browns agreeing to acquire Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans for a package that includes three first-round picks.
Mitchell Trubisky will be the backup to Josh Allen in Buffalo. Trubisky, who only attempted eight passes with the Bills, left as a free agent and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After helping the Minnesota Vikings reach the NFC title game in 2017, Keenum fell back to earth. He has thrown for 6,105 yards, 32 touchdown and 21 interceptions, while completing 63.1% of his passes.
Losing Allen to an injury would be terrible for the Bills. They would have an experienced pair of hands to guide the offense in a tough spot.
The departure of Keenum from Cleveland is somewhat surprising because the quarterback situation is still uncertain even with the addition ofWatson.
The three-time Pro Bowler is still the subject of 22 civil lawsuits from women who leveled allegations of sexual assault and misconduct against him. There is a possibility of a suspension for a portion of the 2022.
The need for the quarterback position is heightened by that.
The only other quarterback on the roster is Baker Mayfield, who has requested a trade after making his feelings clear about the pursuit.
The relationship between the two teams seems to have reached a point of no return. The No. 1 overall pick is on his way out soon after the trade was reported.
The possibility of Cleveland holding on to Mayfield through the last year of his contract is a contingency plan should the NFL hand down a suspension to him.
