One university doesn't want to pay its professors anymore. We are looking at you, UCLA.
The University of California, Los Angeles posted a job for an assistant professor in the chemistry and biochemistry department, but applicants were warned.
The job description on the university's website states that there will be no compensation for the position.
The applications should include a curriculum vitae, cover letter, statement of research, statement of teaching, and a statement on contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion. LA is one of the most expensive cities to live in the US and a position with no pay means no low income or middle class professors would be able to apply. Considering that more people of color live below the poverty line in the US than other marginalized groups, it's unlikely we'll see anyone who isn't white in the role.
Is that for diversity and equity?
The future of science and innovation is at risk if academia continues on this path.
Keeping people who aren't independently wealthy will mean less life-saving tech and medical science in the future, and a less diverse research community overall. James McCune Smith was the first African American doctor in the United States. According to EveryDayHealth, he was denied access to American universities because of his color.
We will excuse you if you think UCLA is off their rocker for denying a science professor a paycheck because they can afford a $4.7 million dollar annual salary for their football coach.
El Salvadorans have become a complete mess because of the economic turmoil.
