The world champion was beaten by 0.123 seconds by Leclerc after a difficult session.

The faster driver, Carlos Sainz, was third, just 0.129 seconds off the pole.

Lewis Hamilton was fifth for Mercedes.

Mercedes had predicted that they were not yet on the pace, but they proved correct.

George Russell made an error at Turn One on his only lap in the final session of qualifications and was ninth.

Russell was beaten by his predecessor at Mercedes Valtteri Bottas, an impressive sixth in his first race for the Alfa Romeo team, ahead of the equally impressive Kevin Magnussen on his return to F1 with the Haas team after a year away.

Pierre Gasly took the final place in the top 10, ahead of Alpine's Fernando Alonso.
