The New York Yankees are said to be in the running for free-agent shortstop Trevor Story.
According to MLB Network's Jon Heyman, Story has emerged as a possibility for the Yankees and is under consideration for the team.
Heyman reported that Story is open to a short-term contract that includes opt-out clauses.
Carlos Correa signed a three-year, $105.3 million contract with the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, which included opt outs after the first two seasons, according to Jeff Passan.
The biggest free agent left on the market is the 29-year-old Story.
When free agency began, Story was part of an elite group of middle infielders, but the rest of them are off the market with Carlos Correa going to Minnesota, Marcus Semien signing with the Texas Rangers and Javier Baez joining the Detroit Tigers.
Kris Bryant (Colorado Rockies) and Freddie Freeman (Los Angeles Dodgers) are two of the top options at other positions.
During his six seasons with the Rockies, Story earned two All-Star nominations and two Silver Slugger Awards.
In Colorado, Story hit at least 24 homers each year for the past three years, despite the COVID campaign being shortened in 2020.
He put up career highs in most major categories during his best seasons in the last two years.
Story had a.
If the 2020 season had been a full one, Story would have put up monster numbers again, as he hit.289 with 11 home runs, 28 RBI and 41 runs in 59 games, as well as a National League-leading 15 steals and four triples.
Story's value dropped a bit after he hit.251 with 24 home runs, 75 RBI, 88 runs and 20 steals, but he would still be a big upgrade for the Yankees.
The Yankees moved Gleyber to second base last season because he was struggling to establish himself at shortstop.
The Yankees used Gio Urshela at the position a lot, but they traded him and Garynchez to the Twins for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt.
First base, second base, and third base are all locked in with the New York Mets.
The Yankees could use D.J. LeMahieu at some point in the season, but they would be better off with Kiner-Falefa as a super utility guy.
Finding an unquestioned option at the infield would go a long way toward rounding out the lineup, and Story fits that bill.
The Yankees have to beat out some stiff competition in order to land Story. According to Heyman, the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox are two of the four teams on Story.
Signing Story out of Boston would be a big win for the Yankees, as they would get everything Story would bring to the table.
Signing Story would probably get the Yankees closer to a title after they finished third in the American League East last season and lost to Boston in the Wild Card Game.
