Booger wouldn't be surprised if Browns win AFC North with Watson (2:16)

Booger talked about how Deshaun fits with the Cleveland Browns after being traded. There are 2 minutes left in the video.

11:00 AM ET

The Cleveland Browns were trying to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

They were so desperate to get him that they were willing to give him more than any other team.

According to a report by Adam Schefter, the Cleveland Browns are set to give a new five-year deal worth a record-breaking $230 million.

All this, despite the fact that he still faces civil lawsuits from women who claim he sexually harassed them during massage sessions. The civil cases are still going on despite the Texas grand jury not indicting him on criminal charges.

It is the most guaranteed money in the history of the league, more than the previous high set by the Packers when Rodgers signed his extension this week. The Bills, Chiefs, and Cowboys are the only other teams to have contracts that have topped $125 million in guaranteed money.

Watson picks the Cleveland team to get more than $200 million.

The Vikings mortgaged their future to land running back Herschel Walker from Dallas in 1989, the last time an NFL team surrendered that much first-round draft capital to land another player. The trade backfired on Minnesota and paved the way for the Cowboys dynasty of the 1990s.

This trade forWatson comes with its own risk for Cleveland, both on and off the field.

Public relations damage has already been done. Despite his legal issues, the Browns gave him a raise and signed him. It is sure to be a controversial decision among their fan base with risk to the image and reputation of the team, including owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, general manager Andrew Berry and coach Kevin Stefanski.

After trading their first, second, and fourth round picks in the next three years, the Cleveland Browns have forfeited their ability to upgrade their roster with high-end talent in the draft. In return, the Browns received a fifth-round pick in the 20th century. Berry has drafted well in his two years as Cleveland's general manager.

While keeping an otherwise loaded roster intact, the Cleveland Browns have enough cap flexibility to absorb the massive deal given to them by Watson. Adding to it will be a challenge, and Cleveland still has big holes to fill on its defensive line.

The code of conduct policy of the National Football League allows for a minimum of six games to be suspended for violating it. The league confirmed in a statement that any trade would have no effect on the ongoing investigation of serious allegations against the player. Discipline may be imposed if the league determines that he violated the personal conduct policy.

It will not cost him much if he is disciplined. The new contract with Cleveland will have only $1 million in base salary for the first year. If he is suspended, he would lose less than $60,000 per game.

Their desperation was underscored by the fact that the contract structure the Browns agreed to was intended to circumvent NFL enforcement.

The franchise has shown multiple times in the past that it is willing to give second chances to players it thinks can help win games.

Three months after the Kansas City Chiefs released running back Kareem Hunt, the Cleveland Browns signed him to a one-year deal. Hunt was suspended for the first eight games of the season.

The Seattle Seahawks drafted a defensive tackle in the second round. In Michigan, he was charged with driving while impaired, obstructing justice and assault on a police officer. The video showed him fighting with police after they stunned him with a stun gun. He was charged with receiving and concealing stolen property after he was found in possession of a stolen truck. He was sentenced to 11 months in jail and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to a number of crimes.

After winning a starting job on the Cleveland defensive line out of training camp, McDowell emerged as a stalwart. He was arrested in January for battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, and public exposure. It is unlikely that he will return to the team this season.

The risk must have been worth it for the Browns. The trade has not been talked about by the team.

The team was looking to replace him with an adult at the position, after a report that Baker had demanded a trade and seemed dead set on never playing another down for Cleveland.

Without a premier quarterback, the Browns were not a serious contender in the AFC and now have stars like Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.

Assuming he is suspended by the league, Cleveland will have a chance in the future, if not in 2022, with its own star quarterback on board.

He was a Pro Bowler in three straight seasons before sitting out last season. He passed for 4,823 yards and 33 touchdown in 2020.

He threw for over 600 yards in two Houston playoff games.

The one missing player in an otherwise Super Bowl-caliber offense, which includes All-Pro running back Nick Chubb, was successfully sold to him by the Browns during their meeting with him in Houston on Tuesday.

Since rejoining the NFL in 1999, the Browns have not appeared to be a legitimate contender.

The cost was high. Despite its risks, one Cleveland was desperate enough to pay.
