Two days after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles, free-agent defensive tackle Fletcher Cox is on his way back to the team.
Ian Rapoport reported that the Eagles and Cox agreed to a one-year contract on Saturday.
Rapoport reported on March 11 that Philadelphia could be about to trade the defensive player.
Ian Rapoport @RapSheetWith all these big names being dealt, who could be the next? Last year, #Eagles Pro Bowl DT Fletcher Cox was nearly dealt at the trade deadline, and teams around the league have continued to call on him. Considering the D-line movement around the league, it’s something to watch.
According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Eagles decided to release Cox on March 17 to avoid paying him $18 million in guaranteed money, and Philadelphia was still interested in bringing him back on a new deal.
Cox is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was named an All-Pro after amassing a career-high 10.5 sacks.
Cox patrols the middle of the defensive line for Philadelphia, which has made the playoffs five times. The Eagles won the Super Bowl with him in February of last year.
Cox was a great selection in the 2012 NFL draft.
He had 35 tackles, 25 solo, 3.5 sacks, and two forced turnovers in 2021. He was the anchor of the defense for a team that went from 4-11-1 the year before to 9-8 and a Wild Card appearance in 2021.
Even if his best years are behind him, Cox should have something left in the tank for the Eagles.
Cox decided to stay in the city for 10 years. The Eagles are building something in Philadelphia under head coach Nick Sirianni, who took a 4-11-1 team in 2020 and turned them into a playoff-bound 9-8 unit in 2021.
The ex-Indianapolis Colts offensive coach has a lot of talent to work with, including quarterback and wide receiver DeVonta Smith. With Cox back, the Eagles are ready to challenge for another playoff spot.
