It was a battle Thursday night. The team refused to back down against a team with two Wooden Award candidates, and the team was leading by four points with 10:38 left to play. After a cold start, a 21-0 run turned the game in their favor.
Timme's teammates started to feed him the ball more often down the final stretch as he played like a projected top-three NBA draft pick. Good idea. Some people think that Gonzaga got exposed in this game. Nah. The team was ready to compete. The most imposing duo in the NCAA tournament, Timme and Holmgren, are still the top team going into the second round.

In his first season as a head coach, Lloyd won his first NCAA tournament game as a Division I head coach and also gave the Wildcats their first NCAA tournament win since 2017: They scored 39 points on looks. Bennedict and Christian helped Arizona advance.
They weren't perfect, but they are 16-1 in their last 17 games and a legit contender to reach a Final Four in Lloyd's first season, but also cut down the nets if they get there.

It's not much you can glean from that. The development of one of his best efforts of the year was a promising development for a team that could use some additional depth while still waiting forMitch Lightfoot, who played just seven minutes on Thursday, to fully recover from his left knee injury. Walker Kessler finished with a stat line (13 points, 10 rebound, nine blocks) that was just one block shy of a points-rebounds-blocks triple-double that only Shaquille O' Neal and Cole Aldrich have secured in NCAA tournament history. Smith finished with 20 points and 14 rebound. Jacksonville State was held to a 31% clip from the field while the tigers made 38% of their 3-point attempts. It will be difficult for any opponent to handle that version of auburn.

The group is capable of great offensive performances. Delaware kept pace with the Wildcats early on Friday, but it couldn't overcome a marksmanship few teams have matched: 51% from the field, 42% from 3 and 98% from the free throw line. The only team with two 50/40/90 games in NCAA tournament history is Villanova. The 2016 national championship was won by the last Nova team that achieved those marks.

It wasn't the first time that Davis was asked to deliver. Wisconsin knows that it will have the best player on the floor. Davis is fearless.
The Badgers outplayed the Raiders in the final minutes, committing just five turnovers. If they want to advance to the later rounds, they will have to play better. Anything seems possible with Davis.

Is Johnny Juzang okay? He missed back-to-back games with an ankle injury and has been 3-for-11 from 3 in his last five games. He scored nine points and was 3-for-11 from the field. With its top player still not back to his pre-injury form, a squad that could have crumbled was led by Jaquez Jr. and Tyger Campbell.

They got what they wanted. On Friday, Beard took his third Division I program to the second round of the tournament. Texas lost five of its last eight games prior to this week, and he had mixed results during the regular season. Andrew Jones, one of five double-digit scorers on the roster, finished with 21 points against the conference tournament champion -- and the only team that lost in the first round.

Defeated No. 10 San Francisco, 92-87 OTThree years ago, Ja Morant emerged as an elite NBA prospect after leading the Racers to a first-round upset. Tevin Brown was a freshman. He was the leader of the team and he finished with 17 points, eight rebound, three assists and two steals in the win against San Francisco. Five Murray State players finished with at least 12 points.
That is not a mistake. They haven't lost since that loss to auburn. Since that night, they have been a top 10 team in offensive rebound rate.
Murray State didn't fold as Thursday's game got tighter. That is a good sign. The Racers will not be intimidated by any other team.

Kalin Lucas, Draymond Green, Kalin Lucas, and Cassius Winston became household names for their efforts in the NCAA tournament. The Spartans couldn't extend their lead enough to feel comfortable as Davidson continued to challenge them in the final minutes of Friday's one-point affair.
Every player in the rotation was prepared for the hurdles this season. Joey Hauser was given the task of guiding his team through the game. Izzo could turn to a different player in the next round. On Friday, Michigan State looked like a mid-level team with a 9-10 record in its last 19 games than a second-weekend squad in the NCAA tournament. Going forward, resilience alone might not be enough.

Losses to Miami and Pitt did not help Davis. It takes a new coach with a lot of new faces some time to put his stamp on a program. In recent weeks, UNC has had some stunning offensive displays that show the brand of basketball Davis intends to use.
The UNC team that beat Duke by 13 points was the same one that beat the Golden Eagles. Brady Manek makes at least four 3s in a game and the Tar Heels improve to 6-2. The Tar Heels had a dominant performance on Thursday and have found a higher gear in the most important part of the season.

The narrative around the season has changed because of the long, bouncy, athletic group that has played basketball for nearly two months.
Duren is the first Memphis player with a double-double in the NCAA tournament in 13 years. The same brand of basketball that has turned a 9-8 squad into a team that has lost just two games since January has helped Memphis as a whole.

Prior to the first round of the NCAA tournament, the Pirates had won six of their last seven games. Entering Friday, the Frogs had a 4-7 record in their last 11 and a sub-.500 record in league play. It seemed that it was held together by a pair of victories over Kansas and Texas Tech.
The team that lost to Kansas in the second round of the Big 12 tournament seemed fresh and rejuvenated. It was the first time since 1987 that the Frogs made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

On Friday, Moore (16 points, four assists, four steals) led Miami to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2016, making the go-ahead free throws that sealed the win in the final seconds. The same Miami team that lost to Virginia and Florida State in the regular season now has wins over Duke, North Carolina and USC. Jim Larranaga's squad continues to beat the odds and that is the story of the season.

The team that showed up for a comeback in the second half on Thursday is the team we will see the rest of the way.
The squad had a double-digit lead at the end of the first half, but it lost it as the game went on. A five-star recruit hit a few big shots late for Michigan, and Hunter Dickinson was steady. The selection committee looked smart when it placed the Michigan team directly into the tournament.

Three other teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference have also advanced to the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament, and now a Notre Dame team that entered the tournament as a non-factor will join them.
