In the semifinals of the women's Frozen Four on Friday, Minnesota-Duluth defeated Northeastern in double-overtime to advance to the title game.
The game winner was scored at the 18:14 mark of the second overtime frame by junior Naomi Rogge. The victory was secured by Emma Soderberg, who made 46 saves.
It was the second time that the program had knocked off a higher-seeded program. In the first round of the tournament, the Bulldogs defeated Harvard and then defeated Minnesota to reach the semis.
Minnesota-Duluth is going to its first title game in five years. The winner of the second semifinal between Ohio State and Yale will play the winner of the first semifinal between the two.
Both sides were familiar with the game between Northeastern and UMD. They faced each other in the semifinals of the Frozen Four, and that game required overtime as well. It was Northeastern who came out on top in the first game of the year.
The Northeastern freshman opened the scoring in the second period on Friday with a rebound chance from Soderberg. Irving potted one against Wisconsin in the quarters and that was her second of the tournament.
The goal stood until midway through the third period, when the Huskies struggled to clear the zone and Taylor Anderson capitalized to tie the game and force extra time.
It was all about the goalie. In the first overtime, Northeastern's Aerin Frankel made a key stop on Gabbie Hughes, and Soderberg stretched out for a save on Irving to push Northeastern over the line.
