Dr. SarahBeth Hartlage has overseen the COVID-19 vaccine rollout throughout Louisville.

Dr. SarahBeth Hartlage, who was the associate medical director of the health department, died.

Her death was announced by the office of the mayor.

Sarah Moyer, the city's chief health strategist, called her death sudden and unexpected.

Moyer said that they were grateful for the opportunity to have known and worked with her.

Hartlage was in Florida this week for a health conference. She jumped into action to help a man who had a medical emergency on the plane and started an IV in the air.

Is there a doctor on the plane?

In September 2020, Hartlage joined the Louisville Health Department. She became the face of the LouVax site at the Kentucky Exposition Center, which was a hub for vaccine distribution in the city.

She made an office under the bleachers, walked the Broadbent Arena floor every two hours, and led meetings.

She spoke to the media on a weekly and biweekly basis as she explained the new vaccines.

Women have been leading the charge in Louisville's war against COVID-19. Their stories are here.

She was interested in researching gender equity in medicine because of her personal experience of being pregnant while she was a resident in training and learning that women in that position weren't guaranteed maternity leave.

Hartlage will be remembered in our community as a deeply compassionate, inspiring leader who made a switch to public health in the middle of a historic public health crisis.

She took command of an amazing team of city workers and volunteers to immunize tens of thousands of people in a previously unthinkably short amount of time, while also working to ensure vaccines are being distributed equitably throughout the community and communicating facts about their safety in ways that are easy to understand

Gov. Andy Beshear and his wife, Britainy Beshear, are sorry to hear of her passing.

He wrote that Dr. SarahBeth Hartlage helped save thousands of lives by leading vaccinations in Louisville.

Dr. Smith praised Hartlage, who he knew both through U of L and her work in the health department, saying she always cared.

It is difficult to quantify what she has meant to this community over the past two years.

The mayor's office asked that people honor Hartlage by donating to her charity.

The charity was named after Hartlage and her daughter, who was born early and had congenital heart disease and other issues. You can read more about the health journey of Camille here.
