In the final scene of Coming Home, the Federation and its president, Rillak, welcome the unnamed president of United Earth to diplomatic negotiations. The finale was under threat from the Dark Matter Anomaly, or DMA, which had emerged nearby and immediately started catapulting waves of debris and destruction at the planet and the united homeworld of the Vulcans and Romulans. Without the timely arrival of Federation HQ and Starfleet, lead by Admiral Vance and Lieutenant Tilly, both planets faced imminent devastation and even with the unified force of a Starfleet re-emboldened by the events of this season and the last, things looked pretty dire for the planet.
Thanks to a little bit of that powerful love and unity that has been so important to Discovery this season, we got an extended epilogue that saw the show's characters celebrate their win and embrace that togetherness. Madame President of United Earth is going to tell the Federation that they want to rejoin the utopian alliance because of the aid and support they received during the crisis. The President of United Earth is an awfully familiar face to us. She is not a famous Star Trek star.
Because of her work in increasing voter turnout and fighting against vote suppression, as well as her recent election as Georgia's governor, she has shot to political stardom in recent years. Like all people with great taste,Abrams has sat down with members of the Star Trek cast to help promote voting rights causes.
On the other hand, it is a very nice moment. I can't believe I get to say that, becauseAbrams gets to be the President of Earth and also the President of the Federation. She has a wonderful look, from her braided hair to her Star Trek-y take on business wear, complete with an integrated cape. She gets to talk to Michael about the hope they both share for the future, and how Star Trek's future is earned not with resting on laurels, but constant, good work. It makes sense to have a representative of the ideals that Star Trek aims to show a logical conclusion to. Star Trek has had a long history of having celebrities make appearances, from the Rock and the King of Jordan.
That is one hand. It's a sweet moment that stops making a lick if you think about the context for more than a few seconds. You might be surprised to know that the president is in talks to have Earth rejoin the Federation. In the wake of an event called "The Burn" before the third season of "Discovery" last year, a lot of Warp travel was rendered impossible. In the third season of Discovery, we learned that Earth was one of the planets that broke away from the Federation and became a harshly isolationist, self-preserving, and militarized society known as United Earth.
We are reminded constantly that this is not the Earth we once knew as the heart of Federation society, even though relationships begin to warm between Earth and the Federation over the course of season three and four. That is the Earth that Star Trek made the president of. Maybe she is a new president-elect and ran on a platform for Federation unification. We are left to wonder about that. It is very strange. It's sweet! Also weird.
In my recap of the finale, I mentioned that there is some level of allowance this season with Discovery to let it indulge in its feel-good messaging, even if said feel-good vibes don't really make sense. It was a big surprise, but another example of asking you to go with those vibes into a happier tomorrow. It's better than the time the show namechecked Musk like he was a good guy.
Wondering where our feed went? The new one can be picked up here.
