A local artist in Las Cruces was attacked by a dog. The family of a local painter namedPenny Duncklee identified her as the victim of a dog attack on March 16 outside her home on the 1200 block of 2nd Street in Las Cruces. Duncklee's family told the Sun-News that she had bite marks on her arms. The family confirmed that Duncklee had her right hand removed. Her family said she is in stable condition at an El Paso hospital. Police and animal control responded to a call for help near Duncklee's home on 2nd Street. Two pit bull-type dogs are believed to have attacked the victim. The dogs are believed to be roaming the neighborhoods near the 1200 block of 2nd Street. One of the neighbors of Duncklee said the dog was either a white female with a brown spot on her ear or a white male with black markings. The description of the dogs has not been confirmed by police or animal control. James and Dora Sosa heard Duncklee screaming for help. Dora said that her husband fought off the two dogs that savaged Duncklee. Dora called the police. Dora said that James had a fractured bone. When she realized which dogs were responsible for the attack, Dora was not surprised. Two other neighbors confirmed that those two dogs have a reputation for harassing people and animals in the neighborhood. The Sun-News reached out to the City of Las Cruces for comment on the attack, including questions about whether the dogs have been found, if the dogs were known to animal control before the attack occurred, and what area residents should do if they discover the dogs. The city has yet to respond to the request. When and if those questions are answered will be updated in this article.
