  • According to a US intelligence estimate, 7,000 Russian troops have been killed in battle.

  • The number of Russian troops killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is more than the number of American troops who have died.

  • Russia could soon be suffering unsustainable losses at this rate.

In the three weeks since Russia launched its war against Ukraine, the fighting has taken a heavy toll on both sides and the civilians are trapped in cities like Mariupol, where authorities are trying to rescue 1,300 people who had sheltered in a theater that was attacked.

Russia's military appears to be mounting the toll.

According to a US intelligence estimate, seven thousand Russian troops have been killed in battle so far. The Times reported on March 16 that four Russian generals had died and that between 14,700 and 21,700 Russians troops had been injured.

The number of Russian military deaths is higher than the number of American troops who have died in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars.

A chart depicting Russian casualties in the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict to casualties in Iwo Jima, the Iraq War, the Afghanistan War, and Pearl Harbor.

One of the bloodiest battles in the history of the Marine Corps was Iwo Jima, where about 6,852 US troops died and around 19,000 were injured in five weeks of fighting against an entrenched Japanese force.

If Russian forces continued to lose troops at this rate in a year, about 121,000 Russian troops would be dead, with injured likely to be three or four times higher, suggesting Russia's offensive must break the Ukrainian resistance or suffer unsustainable losses. American casualties during the Korean War were 36,576, which is higher than the toll of that war.

Heavy losses have been suffered by the military of Ukraine, which has confirmed the deaths of 1,300 troops.
