The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a one-year, $10.75 million deal with JuJu Smith-Schuster, according to Field Yates.
Smith-Schuster wrote a farewell statement to Pittsburgh on his way to Kansas City.
Smith-Schuster had surgery on his shoulder in October and missed the majority of the season. He played in the first five games of the season, but didn't return until Pittsburgh's Wild Card Round game against the Kansas City Chiefs, in which he had five catches for 26 yards.
Smith-Schuster was selected in the second round of the draft. He has 3,855 yards and 26 touchdown catches in 63 career games.
He caught a career-high 111 passes for 1,426 yards and seven touchdown last year.
After the 2020 season, Smith-Schuster became a free agent and received interest from the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs. He signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Steelers.
In the past, Smith-Schuster wanted to stay with the team. After the team's Wild Card Round loss to the Chiefs, he said on his social media that he would like to stay with the franchise.
"I’ve said it before and have the same stance: I’d love to be Pittsburgh for life. I hope we can make that happen this offseason and I want to be a part of this franchise’s return to glory. It’s not a matter of if, but when, and I hope I’m wearing the black and gold, celebrating a Super Bowl with these fans, when it happens. Love you guys."
It should come as no surprise that Smith-Schuster ended up there, since he was close to signing with the franchise last season.
Smith-Schuster will make Kansas City's depth even better. He will join Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman and Byron Pringle, as well as tight endTravis Kelce, as a top target for Patrick Mahomes.
Smith-Schuster's departure to the Chiefs means that the Steelers will need to improve their receiving corps. Unless an addition is made, Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool will highlight the group in 2022.
