While the Yankees are confident that unvaccinated players will be on the field on opening day, the city government is not so sure.

The private sector mandate will not be suspended and there will be no health benchmarks for infections, hospitalizations and deaths, according to the New York City health commissioner.

He said that people who have tried to predict what will happen in the future have found egg on their face.

Private employers such as the Yankees and Mets are required to enforce vaccine mandates on employees.

Some vaccine mandates that would prohibit members of New York's two baseball teams from playing games at home will eventually be removed by the city, according to Mayor Eric Adams.

The visiting teams would be allowed to have unvaccinated players in the games.

Unvaccinated members of the Yankees would miss 93 games and unvaccinated members of the Mets would miss 81 games if Canada banned unvaccinated players.
