The ultra-wealthy houses look like nobody lives in them. There is an eerie quality, the opposite of hominess. The new movie Windfall opens with a long shot of a mansion and patio furniture from an Architectural Digest spread. The outdoor coffee table is made of concrete. It all costs a lot. In a long, wordless scene, we follow a man who wanders around a gorgeous property, sips iced coffee by the pool and eventually walks into the empty home. The rooms have Spanish tile, pristine plaster walls, and abstract pottery. The man almost leaves. He returned to the house and started taking things. He stuffs all the cash he can find into the pockets of his ratty pants and puts a wristwatch around his wrist. This is a break-in. The thieves is on his way out when the owners show up. They catch him before he escapes. The man is a total amateur, but he is also a criminal, taking a couple hostage.
