In the movies there is usually only one star, and his name is called "Godzilla." But actor Akira Takarada was a rare exception to that rule. Over the course of the first few decades of the franchise, Takarada appeared frequently, including in the Hollywood remake. Takarada died this week at the age of 87. There was no cause of death given.
The news of Takarada's passing was announced on the Toho website.
Takarada got a shot at acting after passing an auditioning in 1953. His first film? There is a weird monster movie. He played a sailor. Ogata tells the Japanese Coast Guard about the first ship that was destroyed by the King of all Kaiju. The role was used in the American, 1957 French, and 1977 Italian recuts of the film. He was back as a new character in several films, including the 1964 film, Mothra vs. Godzilla, the 1966 film, Invasion of Astro Monster, and the 1969 film, Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. In 1992 and 2004 Takarada was back for the movies. According to Variety, the Japanese Immigration Agent scenes were cut from the film.
Takarada's career would have been better if he only made movies about monsters. The Japanese redubs of American hits were one of the many films he did. He provided the voice of Doctor Dolittle in Doctor Dolittle, as well as in The Great Mouse Detective and Aladdin. Ratigan and Jafar were the villains he voiced. He reprised the Jafar voice in a video game.
That is where Takarada will be forever. They are in their hearts.
