Toxic debris could be sent into the sky from the Walmart distribution fire.

USA TODAYUSA TODAY

The Walmart distribution center in Indiana caught fire on Wednesday and thick smoke billowed into the air.

The structure was on fire. The post was from the police department. The building was engulfed in flames when fire authorities arrived.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from miles away and even on satellite imagery, as the fire grew in the town near the Indianapolis International Airport.

The firefighter who suffered minor injuries while fighting the fire was released back to the scene.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to the fire chief.

Anderson said there was no reason to believe it was suspicious or anything.

There were several small fires in Central Park.

Mario Cruz, who has worked in the stocking department for three years at the distribution center, said that there is always a lot of cardboard inside and that they stocked everything from clothing to food to electronics.

According to the deputy chief of the police department, Walmart believed that all their employees were accounted for and that they got out of the building safely.

The distribution center was full of items that could become toxic if burned. The fire chief said that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Environmental Protection Agency arrived Wednesday to assist in testing for hazardous materials and air quality issues from the fire.

Anderson said that they would treat everything as if it was hazardous.

The fire department said the operation is expected to last until Wednesday evening.
