Voit's tenure with the organization has come to an end after the Yankees re-signed Anthony Rizzo as their first baseman.
The Yankees are trading Voit to the San Diego Padres for a right-handed pitching prospect.
New York has a two-year deal with Rizzo. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs prior to the trade deadline and hit.249/.340/.428 in 49 games with the Yankees.
The Yankees have a crowded infield rotation. They have Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and others. The Yankees are expected to have a primary designated hitter this season.
Voit is the odd man out because he is limited to first base. The Yankees got a good return for him in a potential trade because of his contract status.
The Padres selected Lange in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft. He struggled in his first season as a professional. He had a 6.97 average with 29 strikeouts and 15 walks in 22 starts for rookies last year.
If he can improve his command and overcome a knee injury that hampered him last season, he could be the 13th-best prospect in San Diego's farm system.
Durability is a problem for Voit. The Missouri native has missed at least 44 games in two of the last three seasons because of injuries.
Voit is expected to make $5.50 million in 2022, according to Spotrac. He will hit free agency after the 2024 campaign after two years of team control.
The Padres tried to make a big splash in free agency, as USA Today reported they got in on the bidding for Freddie Freeman. The Dodgers signed the National League's Most Valuable Player to a six-year, $162 million deal.
San Diego needed an upgrade at either first base or designated hitter. Jurickson Profar and Eric Hosmer were projected to start at those spots. Hosmer hit 12 homers and drove in 65 runs last season.
Profar, who signed a three-year, $21 million contract last offseason, had a.227/.329/.320 slash line in 137 games.
Mark Feinsand reported on MLB.com that the Padres are aggressively shopping for players. Hosmer has four years and $59 million left on his contract.
