All businesses in the country were required to accept the virtual currency six months ago. It has been a disaster according to actual Salvadorans.

In interviews with global tech reporting nonprofit Rest of World, the people of all stripes painted a vastly different picture of their country'sBitcoin roll out than the one portrayed by America.

Those who were interviewed described headaches that caused them to abandon the digital currency. It's happening all over, including the country's experimental town of Bitcoin Beach. The worst thing about it is that it doesn't involve any glitch using the technology. The most striking anecdote in the story came from Mario Gómez, a 30-something Salvadoran software developer who had ideological complaints about his country's arguably authoritarian government taking control of what was supposed to be a decentralized currency.

The software developer posted a long thread on the subject after the Chivo wallet was announced. According to Rest of World, the police pulled him over just before it was launched because of an issue with his car. It looked like the detainment was politically motivated after he was taken to two different stations. The Salvadoran government dropped the case after announcing it was investigating him for financial fraud.

TacuaZines we have to take care of each other.

I saw somewhere that "even if we don't know each other, we need each other" 💖🌿 pic.twitter.com/OqFvXwpULt
