The Carolina panthers tried to trade for Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions but ended up trading for Sam Darnold of the New York Jets. The Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl. He was 4-7 as the starter. They lost out on a trade attempt for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson after the Carolinas were told they were out of the running. Since the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints are the two remaining teams, the Carolinas will have to face them twice a year. Stay updated there. What now? The only thing certain is that Carolina needs a franchise quarterback to fulfill owner David Tepper's dream of winning a Super Bowl. The odds of getting to the big game are long if you don't have a quarterback who can win on his own. Since Russell Wilson went from Seattle to Denver, there are no long-term solutions for Carolina. Jimmy Garoppolo is recovering from shoulder surgery and is unlikely to be pursued by the Carolinas because he will demand a big salary. McShay's rankings are:

The top pick of the draft wants out of Cleveland after the team made a run at the quarterback.
The salary cap hit would be $18.9 million if the Browns were willing to trade him. He would be a free agent in 2023 if not signed to an extension.
It is believed that the Carolinas would have needed to pay for the three first-round draft picks, players and other picks, like it is believed, if they had traded for the three-time Pro Bowl selection. He was on the Texans roster last season but was not on the game day roster.
Carolina could use the money and draft picks saved by not getting Watson to build around Baker Mayfield.
Philadelphia's Gardner Minshew could also be a possibility. Last year, he was the target of a run by the Panthers. He would be a quick fix and not much of an upgrade.
Ryan Fitzpatrick is available in free agency. It would be an upgrade from Darnold.
The most logical person here is Winston. He had a good season with the New Orleans Saints, but his season was cut short by an injury.

The 28-year-old, who was the top pick of the 2015 draft, is unlikely to be retained by the Carolinas past this season. He has a career record of 33-44 and has thrown a lot of picks.
Carolina could look to re-sign CamNewton, who led it to a 15-1 regular-season record and the playoffs in 2015. Don't bank on it. He was a starter in Carolina and New England for the past three years, but he was 0-5 in Carolina last season.
This year's class hasn't gotten rave reviews, so selecting a quarterback with the No. 6 pick is still an option.
Scott Fitterer is expected to be at Liberty on Tuesday to look at a player who has the highest ceiling among the class, even if he isn't ready for the league right away.
On Wednesday, Fitterer is likely to go to Pittsburgh to see Kenny Pickett, who is considered the most NFL ready quarterback. When Rhule was at Temple, Pickett committed to him.
The quarterback class is better than the critics think.
There is a good franchise player at six in this draft, without knowing who they are.
If the top two offensive tackles are gone, there are quarterback options in the draft, including trading down for extra picks and still taking one.
The offensive line allowed 52 sacks a year ago and will be rebuilt by Fitterer.
