The studio Blue Sky was forced to censor a same-sex kiss in their animated adaptation of Nimona. The staffers took kiss out of future presentations with Disney executives, but they hoped to include it in the final film. According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the movie was almost complete when Disney decided to scrap it.
Nimona was published as a webcomic. He began writing it in 2012 while still a student at MICA. Nimona is a shape-shifter who tries to bring down a corrupt institution in the fantasy comic. The comic was published as a graphic novel and won an Eisner award. Nimona has roots in Stevenson's own experiences. Nimona is considered non- conforming.
The Ice Age films were made by Blue Sky studios. There were disagreements between leadership at the studio when Disney took over. Disney executives were against the queer characters and themes in the movie in 2020. Nimona, despite having a 2022 release date and being near completion, was canceled by Disney due to the studio shutting down in February of 2021.
Disney's track record for queer representation is non-existent, even though it has started taking steps towards more racially representative stories and films. This news comes as no surprise considering the controversy it now finds itself surrounded by. There was a chance for a queer creator to have openly queer characters on screen, and make a huge impact in the cultural consciousness. We have an unfinished film that is in production hell, and have found more violence against queer existence in media at the hands of one of the biggest movie studios on the planet. Disney is probably not the happiest place on earth anymore.
