Yankees Rumors: Luke Voit Drawing Interest from Padres in Trade Talks

Voit's status with the team appears to be uncertain after the Yankees signed Anthony Rizzo to be their first baseman.

The San Diego Padres are interested in acquiring Voit if the Yankees decide to trade him.

The Yankees signed Anthony to a two-year deal on Thursday. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs prior to the trade deadline and hit.249/.340/.428 in 49 games with the New York Yankees.

The Yankees have a crowded infield rotation. They have Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and others. The Bronx will likely have a primary designated hitter this season.

Voit, who is limited to first base or designated hitter, would seem to be the odd man out. The Yankees will likely be able to get a good return for him in a potential trade because of his contract status.

Voit'sDurability has been a problem throughout his career. The Missouri native has missed at least 44 games in two of the previous three seasons because of injuries.

Voit is expected to make $5.50 million in 2022, according to Spotrac. He will have two more years of team control and free agency after the 2024 campaign.

The Padres tried to make a big splash in free agency, as USA Today reported they got in on the bidding for Freddie Freeman. The Dodgers signed the National League's Most Valuable Player to a six-year, $162 million deal.

San Diego needs an upgrade at first base and designated hitter. Right now, Eric Hosmer and Jurickson Profar are projected to start. Hosmer hit 12 homers and drove in 53 runs last season.

Profar, who signed a three-year, $21 million contract last offseason, had a.227/.329/.320 slash line in 137 games.

Mark Feinsand reported on Sunday that the Padres are aggressively shopping for players. Hosmer has four years and $59 million left on his contract, though he can opt out after 2022.
