With gas prices reaching an all-time national average high, fewer drivers may be on the road.

A family-owned gas station in Texas realized they were robbed of over 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel by thieves who used a trap door.

Jerry Thayil, the manager of the gas station in southwest Houston, told USA TODAY that he spotted a discrepancy in diesel fuel.

After noticing it again the next day, he watched camera footage and found a pair of minivans that had been parked over the inlets for the station's tanks.

He noticed a van driving over the container lids, but no one got out of the vehicle.

Stealing fuel is a new crime due to rising gas prices.

Can I switch to regular gas to save on gas prices?

They have a crazy trap door in their vehicle. He told ABC 13 that they had to have another man inside the vehicle to open the fuel tank.

Thayil said he chased the van away on the fourth attempt.

He told CNN that he didn't want to let them hit them again and lose more money.

He said the business lost between $5,000 and $6,000 worth of fuel.

According to the Houston Police Department, there have been two reports of gas thefts in the area within the last six months.

It is not known if the incidents are related.

Thayil told CNN that the business is in talks with its insurance company to see if the thefts are covered.

Chris Woodyard contributed to the report.
