ThePorsche 718, a mid-engine roadster that injects the automaker's motorsports history into a modern-day package, is going all electric by 2025.
One piece of the company's ambitious and recently expanded plans is the 718 EV, which was announced during the annual meeting. The company wants 80% of new sales to be electric by the year 2030.
We have a very flexible engine strategy because of the different speed of transformation in the different regions of the world.
The upcoming Macan is the third all-electric vehicle in the portfolio, following the Taycan and the 718 EV.
The rising popularity of the Taycan can't be achieved by the new sales target. Company executives said in a briefing before the annual meeting that an all-electric Macan and the 718 EV will help close the gap. The company said Friday that it will build out a proprietary network of EV charging stations that will include lounge-like spots for customers to work or drink coffee while waiting for their batteries to charge.
The Macan will first launch in Europe in 2023, followed by the U.S. in 2024. Oliver Blume said that the 718 EV will debut in the year 2025. The Macan will be based on the Premium Platform Electric platform, an architecture that was first developed by Porsche and AUDI.
The 718 EV will have an 800-volt system that will allow for fast charging in the industry, as well as a special configuration for the car, according to Blume.
That won't be the only challenge. In order to produce the two vehicles on the same production line, many of the same components in the 718 and 912 will be used.
He said it was a different platform, but using the same modules as on the two-door sports car.
A hybrid version of the classic sports car is in the works. This will not be a plug-in hybrid and will instead be a sporty hybrid similar to the technology in thePorsche 919 hybrid that won in Le Mans.
