  • The House of Representatives passed a bill to suspend normal trade relations with Russia.

  • Eight House Republicans voted against the bill.

  • Some of them were Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, and Thomas Massie.

The war in Ukraine prompted the House of Representatives to pass a bill to suspend normal trade relations with Russia.

The act allows President Joe Biden to increase tariffs on products from Russia and Belarus if the US wants to suspend Russia from the World Trade Organization.

The legislation needs to be signed by Biden and passed by the Senate.

One day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave an address to Congress, the House voted to impose harsher sanctions on Russia. Seventeen members of Congress voted against the measure.

Russia has been allowed to use the territory of Belarus for staging invasions despite not being the primary aggressor in the current conflict.

Some on the right flank of the party have adopted a different tactic, which is why Congress has been relatively unified in calling for Russia to be punished. Members of the GOP criticized Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina after he called Zelenskyy a thug at an event.

The eight Republicans who voted against the bill were all Republicans.

  • Georgia's Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

  • Gaetz is from Florida.

  • Lauren Boebert is from Colorado.

  • Massie is from Kentucky.

  • Arizona's congressman is Andy Biggs.

  • Dan Bishop is from North Carolina.

  • Glenn Grothman is from Wisconsin.

  • Roy is from Texas.

Most of them are on the right side of the Republican Party.

In a Thursday floor speech, she claimed that Washington seems to care more about sending our sons and daughters to a potential war than pressing.

Massie told Insider in an email that the bill allows Biden and future Presidents to sanction virtually anyone they choose anywhere on the globe without Congressional approval.

Boebert told Insider in an email that Congress keeps focusing on distraction abroad and not our own challenges brought on by Joe Biden at home, and that she believed the bill had bad language that could empower Biden to sanction people.

Roy told Insider in an email that he would have supported the bill if targeting Russia and Belarus were the only focus, but he objected to the legislation because it would give the President the power to issue sanctions against anyone he deems responsible.

Insider reached out to the other offices of the House Republicans.
