According to the Philadelphia Inquirer and the NFL Network, the Philadelphia Eagles are releasing defensive tackle Fletcher Cox.
The Eagles would have had to guarantee $18 million of his salary if they had made the move. He said that the team and Cox's representatives are talking about a possible reunion.
Cox has spent his entire career in Philadelphia. His 156 appearances are tied for the 12th-most in franchise history.
Thursday's move is an example of the harsh realities of the league. The streak of six straight Pro Bowl appearances ended in 2021. He finished the season with 35 tackles, 3.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, and two forced turnovers.
Eliot Shorr-Parks @EliotShorrParksFletcher Cox is still a good starting defensive tackle. The #Eagles roster and defensive line is worse with him not on it.
It was difficult to justify his nearly $15 million cap hit for 2022, as he appears to be declining relative to his All-Pro peak in 2018, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Even if only temporary, a divorce was inevitable.
Cox is going for the open market and the recruitment is already under way.

The Eagles have three picks in the top 20 of the draft, which will allow them to address multiple areas.
If Cox doesn't return to Philly, the team could target a defensive tackle on the first day.
