Don't binge-watch, pour one out. People who share their passwords with others outside of their homes will be charged by the company.
In a post on Wednesday, the streaming giant announced the move. It will end 15 years of password sharing between friends, family and your college roommate.
For the last year we have been working on ways to enable members who share outside their household to do so easily and securely, while also paying a bit more. The features will be tested in the near future in Costa Rica,Chile, and Peru.
Customers who would like to continue sharing passwords can pay to add an extra member, which will give them access to two more people outside of the household.
Profile Transfer will allow subscribers to transfer their profile information, watch history, and personalize their recommendations to a new paid account.
The move is not all that surprising. 15 years ago, the streaming world was a lot different than it is today. With tons more competition from the likes of Disney+, not to mention a changing entertainment landscape now that COVID restrictions are being lifted, it's likely that Netflix is starting to feel the pressure.
The company's stock has plummeted from last November. It is no surprise that it is looking for more ways to shore up funds.
It was fun while it lasted. It will not be messed up by your friend's mom's love of Christmas movies.
There is a real phone number on the screen.
