The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts have had contract talks with free-agent quarterback Jameis Winston.

"I still view myself as a starter in this league and that's what I'm looking for."

After starting the first seven games of the season for the Saints, he tore his knee and missed the rest of the year. He had 1,170 passing yards and 14 touchdown in seven games.

The Saints won four of their final 10 games after being 5-2 in their starts.

In the past, efficiency was an issue for the 2015 No. 1 overall draft pick. He led the league with 5,109 passing yards and 33 touchdown passes, but his 30 turnovers were the most in the league.

If he qualified, his 102.8 quarterback rating would have been seventh-best in the league. If he can prove he is healthy, he could get another start.

The Saints still need a quarterback, even though they are considered a contender to land Deshaun Watson in a trade with the Houston Texans. The team had a second meeting on Wednesday.

After Sean Payton retired, the organization went for continuity, and that could mean a quality fall-back option. Dennis Allen was promoted to head coach while Pete Carmichael Jr. will remain the offensive coach. The system in New Orleans is familiar to him.

The Colts should be in the market for a proven passer after trading for the Washington Commanders. James Morgan and Sam Ehlinger are the only quarterbacks on the current roster.
