Nine people, including seven members of a college golf team, were killed in a head-on collision in New Mexico. Two students were flown more than 200 miles to Texas in critical condition. Morgan Chesky reports for NBC. A group of people, including a coach from a New Mexico university, were killed when a pickup slammed into their van while they were on their way to a tournament. Two of the University of the Southwest students were in critical condition after being flown to a Lubbock hospital. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the students who were killed were 18 to 22 years old and from Portugal, Mexico, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. The driver and a passenger of the pickup were killed. The private Christian school near the Texas state line said in a statement that the USW campus community is shocked and sad as they mourn the loss of members of their university family. We know what the victims are. The men's and women's golf program at the University of the Southwest was led by Tyler James. James was the golf coach at East Texas Baptist University, where he helped turn the team into top competitors. James death was described by the golf coach at the college as very tragic. Williams said that he was a wonderful young man and that he was building a nice program at USW. The tight-knit community a couple hours northwest of Dallas was devastated by her death, said Schniederjan, who coached Stone for her sophomore, junior and senior years. Stone, a freshman, was majoring in global business management and wanted to be a well-known business owner. She said her favorite golf memories were when she was in the van. According to an athlete profile on the university's website, the freshman from Texas was studying criminal justice with hopes of working for the Secret Service someday. Tab Dumont, the athletic director of the school district, said in a statement that the community was in shock. He said that he was a great kid from a great family and that he was aphenomenal golfer. The coach of the golf team told the San Antonio Express-News that it made everyone around him work just as hard as he did. He told the newspaper that he felt like he lost his son. According to his university bio, Jackson Zinn was a junior from Colorado who was majoring in hospital management and minoring in sports management. He taught special needs children with a soccer league in the city, according to a family friend. She said in a Facebook post that Jackson was sweet, had blue eyes, and could wink. She said thatevastated does not do justice. Gary Raines told NBC's "TODAY" show that his daughter, Karisa Raines, was a junior studying biology and was on track to graduate a year early. He said she was going to return to school for a master's degree in forensic science. He said that they keep thinking that they will wake up from the nightmare.
