GOP Sen. Romney has taken a cue from the classroom in his office décor.

Romney told a group of donors at a closed-door event on Monday that he displays a chart in his office showing the history of world civilizations over the past 4,000 years as a reminder of the fragility of democracy, CBS News reported.

Romney told the crowd that the graphic shows how autocracy and despotism have been the default settings for governments throughout the world's history.

Romney told the group that preserving liberal democracy is an extraordinary challenge and that they are the only significant experiment in democracy.

Romney and Cheney are two of the few congressional Republicans who have spoken out against Trump.

Cheney was the most senior House Republican to vote to impeach Trump. She lost her position in House Republican leadership as a result, and is now the top Republican on the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol riots.

Romney was the only Republican senator who voted to convict Trump in his two impeachment trials.

Both spoke out against the invasion of Ukraine by the Russians and for more military support for the country.

The strengths of our institutions, the rule of law, our courts, Congress, and so forth are what kept us from falling in with the same kind of authoritarian leader as Vladimir Putin.

Cheney, who represents Wyoming's at-large House district, will face the biggest political test of her career on August 16 when she faces a Trump-endorsed primary challenger.

Romney told the crowd that people of character and courage have stood up for right at times. Liz Cheney is such a person.

Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynn Cheney, were in attendance at the Monday night event, which raised over half a million dollars for Cheney's reelection campaign.

Bill Kilberg, one of the organizers of the fundraiser, told CBS that people are hungry for a sensible, rational alternative in politics.
