No U.S. president has spoken to Americans in memory, so he spoke to them and pleaded for them to live up to their expectations. He said that the fight for independence, the bombardment of Pearl Harbor, and the 9/11 attacks all pose a threat to our country. He told his congressional audience that Ukrainians have a dream too, and challenged those who claim to support it to put up or shut up. "This is a terror that Europe has not seen for 80 years, and we are asking for an answer from the whole world," Zelenskyy said. Zelenskyy is a Ukrainian. This was the language of Americans, and of a particular American, the greatest orator this country produced in the last century. It is time to make justice a reality for the children of God. Like Martin Luther King Jr., Zelenskyy insisted that it was time for America to rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed, and he suggested that it could be accomplished by providing his own people with 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 The world has come to know the president of Ukraine as unshaven and in a T-shirt with fire in his eyes and bags of exhaustion. What authority he projected across the video screen in the Capitol auditorium, and how small the audience looked as he challenged them to match the courage of his own people. It was a rhetorical triumph, even in translation. This is 2022, not 1963, so instead of a choir Zelenskyy was accompanied by a video showing the suffering of Ukraine. He didn't say a word as the images of apartments burning and children wailing over their mothers' bloodied corpses were still fresh, then he appealed for a new, more muscular global alliance that would guarantee swift retribution against Putin. Zelenskyy thanked President Joe Biden, U.S. lawmakers and the American public for their moral, economic and strategic support. He didn't think that the United States has done anything to rescue his country from tyranny or honor its own pretensions to global leadership. He said that Strong doesn't mean big. Zelenskyy's personal courage and conviction should not diminish the magnitude of his ask or the risk the U.S. would take on if it seeks to satisfy his requests. A no-fly zone is a pledge to shoot down Russian pilots who violate any perimeter the U.S. establishes. Americans have an even graver responsibility not to cause a nuclear holocaust that could take an unprecedented toll on innocent lives. It is hard to imagine an American who watched the speech complaining that the rising price of gas is more important than a war. Even as Ukrainians flee their homes, Zelenskyy's American history should not be forgotten. Zelenskyy is the leader of the free world today, even though he is stopped in his English or casual dress. It is not known how far smaller politicians will follow him. The editorial page editor is Brian Dickerson. He can be reached at bdickerson@freepress.com.
