At least six states have been found with ticks carrying a mysterious and rare virus that can sicken or even kill older adults or people with underlying conditions, according to a new study.

The Heartland virus was picked up by lone star ticks in Georgia, according to a report.

The co-author of the study said they wanted to bring awareness rather than panic.

The Heartland virus, which can be transmitted to a person by a tick, can cause a number of symptoms. The CDC doesn't know if other ticks can also spread the virus or if people can be exposed to it in other ways.

50 cases of the disease caused by the virus have been reported by January 2021, according to the CDC. In severe cases, patients have ended up in the hospital and while most have recovered with supportive care, a few older individuals with medical conditions have died.

Some people with the virus have lower than normal white blood cell counts and lower than normal counts of platelets, which aid in blood clotting. Increased levels of liver enzymes can be a sign of illness.

The Heartland virus was discovered in northwest Missouri in 2009, after two men were hospitalized with symptoms. It is not known if the virus has spread to other areas of the U.S., but it has been reported in lone star ticks from Missouri, Alabama, Illinois, Kansas, and New York.

Lone star ticks have been found to carry diseases that cause ehrlichiosis and tularemia. The bite from a lone star tick has been linked to the development of meat allergies in some people.

In Georgia, where a person was diagnosed with Heartland virus, 2,960 ticks were collected from around the country. The ticks were positive for the virus.

According to a CDC blood bank study, 1 percent of the donor samples contained the antibodies to the Heartland virus, which has only been reported in a small number of cases.

He said that the burden and impact may be much greater than reported.

The data from the blood bank suggests that many people do not become seriously ill from the virus, according to a professor at the school.

The CDC doesn't require that cases be reported to them.

The main source of diseases in the continental U.S. is ticks. There were over 50,000 cases of tick-borne disease in 2019. There are many tick-borne illnesses in the U.S.

The lone star is not the only tick that carries diseases. A bite from the black-legged tick can transmit a number of diseases.

Ticks and climate change

There are lone star ticks that are carrying the Heartland virus.

A tick that was attached to a resident of Suffolk County in Long Island was found to have a disease. They had become very common by the 1990s.

It is very likely that climate change has had an impact.

He said thatTicks like warmer temperatures.

The bacterium that causes Lyme disease can take up to 48 hours to be transmitted to someone.

Most of the research has been done on another virus, the Powassan virus, and there has been some limited work on the Heartland virus, according to Laura Harrington, a professor of entomology at Cornell University and director of the Northeast. It is thought that there is a similar trend for other viruses.

Not waiting until the end of the day to check for ticks is what that means. It is possible to protect yourself with regular tick checks.
