Senate Republicans aren't worried about sparking World War III by sending more US weapons to Ukraine. They say Putin is already 'escalating every single day.'
Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, standing with his hands on opposite sides of a podium, speaks about the Russian invasion in Ukraine while flanked by a half dozen GOP colleagues during a news conference at the U.S. Capitol on March 16, 2022 in Washington, DC.

A group of Senate Republicans said that giving Ukraine all the military aid it needs to repel Russian invaders won't draw the US deeper into the conflict than it already is because Russian President Vladimir Putin has already declared war on America.

The senator from Idaho said that the man said that the United States was at war with it. He thinks we are.

During an hour-long press conference responding to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's plea for immediate help, 15 Republican lawmakers called on President Joe Biden to do more.

Rob Portman of Ohio, who co-chairs the Senate Ukraine Caucus, brushed aside concerns that giving Zelenskyy what he wants would make America more active. He said that it is already happening.

Portman said at the Capitol that he doesn't think providing additional lethal weaponry is escalatory. We are talking about giving Ukrainians the ability to defend themselves.

The US is sending $800 million worth of cutting-edge systems to Ukraine, as part of a new defense package, after Biden warned that the war could be long and difficult.

Zelenskyy shared a video of the Russian attacks and destruction to Congress, causing many lawmakers to cry.

Portman said the televised carnage Zelenskyy shared with Congress makes it difficult to say that the Russians are not escalating.

If you watched the video today, you can see that they have now targeted hospitals and daycare centers. Portman said that Putin was killing innocent civilians in order to try to get them to submission. I don't know what is if that is escalatory.

Republican lawmakers stopped short of calling for US troops to be involved in the fight.

Portman is not suggesting that we put boots on the ground. I suggest that we do everything we can to protect a country that is a great ally of ours.

The senator from Iowa said that she and her colleagues are willing to take risk by sharing fighter jets and missile technology with Zelenskyy. She urged Biden to do the same before it was too late.

"America must do more, we know Putin doesn't stop at the border of Ukraine."
