The entire province of Jilin, which is home to 24 million people and shares a border with North Korea, was locked down in order to contain the latest outbreak of Covid.

Beijing has relied on strict lockdowns and massive testing to control previous outbreaks and bring Covid cases to zero. Jilin has been locked down for the first time since the Pandemic began two years ago. The largest outbreak China has seen since the beginning of the Pandemic in 2020 is being tested by that strategy.

The city of 17 million people was locked down for a week after 66 positive Covid cases were recorded on Saturday. Shenzhen is home to one of the busiest ports in the world, ShenzhenYantian Port, which could cause major supply chain disruptions if closed.

A major supplier for Apple, Foxconn Technology Group, has already closed their factories because of the lockdown. The production will be moved to other areas in mainland China.

Online learning is being used in schools in the city of Shanghai.

The city of Hong Kong is facing a massive Covid outbreak that has caused over 700,000 infections and 4,066 deaths since January. The chief executive of Hong Kong said that her city is very different from mainland China and can't implement the same policies.

China said last summer that it had given 2 billion vaccine shots. Chinese authorities have so far only administered domestically-produced vaccines whose efficacy has been questioned, and have refused to import vaccines from abroad such as those made by Pfizer and Moderna.
